Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-law student, kills an old pawnbroker and her sister, perhaps for money, perhaps to prove a theory about being above the law. He comes to police attention through normal procedures (he was the victim's client), but his outbursts make him the prime suspect of the clever Porfiry... (imdb)

Coleção Folha/Versátil Grandes Livros no Cinema.

There are some wonderful shots and nice touches, particularly in the tense early scenes. Taratorkin does a fine job as Raskolnikov, haunted and conflicted. It's quite watchable. However, I felt too much time was spent on secondary characters. What we care about is Raskolnikov's state of mind, and perhaps this is where any adaptation is destined to fail. Although the action of the story is compelling and the production is generally more than competent, it feels like there's something missing.

Lev Kulidzhanov brings some fresh touches to a largely faithful adaptation--a nightmare-pursuit, a discordant clock in the pawnbroker's apartment--but his most significant accomplishment is in the casting. Georgi Taratorkin is a solid, haunted Raskolnikov, and Innokenty Smoktunovsky's subtle, effete Porfiry hits the right not; top honors, though, to Efim Kopelyan's suave yet pathetic Svidrigailov. The script can be choppy, but it trucks along nicely for its 3 1/2 hours; fine B&W cinematography.
