Crossing Delancey

A good chunk of this romantic comedy is dull, predictable & rarely even grin-worthy, so I spent some time wondering how loud the cries of anti-Semitism would be if a Gentile had featured these stereotypes. Its Jewish & female focus is its only distinguishing feature (a breastfeeding baby is framed like its the secret of the cosmos) until Irving's matchmaking attempt veers unexpectedly & Riegert calls out her looking down on him. It eventually makes small impressions, but they're a while coming.

When you get a chance to date a pickle man, you date the pickle man. Always neat to watch a film starring people you recognize as character actors. This film asks the question -- what if a romantic comedy was written where the lead woman is chaotic?

Imagine if Joan Micklin Silver had had, like, Nora Ephron's career...

Just a delightful and heartfelt movie. Even tho this movie is only 30ish years old it feels like we will never see stuff like this again. Most people won’t give a shit but man this was nice. I’m now firmly in the gonna tape every JMS movie I can camp
