Beautiful cinematography and wirework, but what impresses me most about this after rewatching it is that characterization is surprisingly good - even characters who are relatively minor are convincing and interesting. The film has a magic feel to it all the way through and is a pleasure to watch.

I absolutely love this film (and the ambiguity of the ending!), but this is a good example of culture oversaturation - or, the phenomenon making the film more than it is at the time (and as a result, less than it is in the future). At least this film created a resurgence to see more Wuxia, but it also spawned a hellfire of stupidity (e.g. Iron Monkey, Hero, Zu Warriors. And Ashes of Time Redux doesn't get a wide release? Sheesh). Culture quibbles aside, great camerawork and assured direction

I have never cared about a story less in my life. I just wanted more fighting, more flying and more beautiful cinematography. And my god is the cinematography beautiful. Yun-Fat Chow and Ziyi Zhang are both incredible as well. That scene in the trees is gonna be unforgettable.

What's surprising, seeing Crouching Tiger after all this time, is how heavy it is on character and story. There's, what, 15 minutes of fighting in a 2 hour movie, and the real focus is on its themes of love, pride, and cultural/gender roles. Fortunately, it's very engaging on that level, and its simplicity gives it the feeling of a fable or fairy tale (as does the film's sense of mysticism, via all those pretty choreographed wire scenes). And yeah, it sure is nice to look at.

It rarely happens that a traditional martial arts movie has a strong story to justify its action. But, not with Ang-Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Gliding in the air, climbing the walls, defying the laws of gravity; All these would have been termed humbug if it were not for this movies. The action is poetic. The leading ladies remain graceful, yet strong; And the male protagonist strong, yet graceful. This movie is a poem.

Ang Lee's lyrical "Wo hu cang long" gracefully blends breathtaking fight sequences and romance while significantly amplified by stunning cinematography and camerawork, a beautiful score and solid performances. Although not a fan of martial arts, I was compelled throughout and even in awe of the craftsmanship that went into the fights. And despite not breaking any new ground in terms of storytelling, the film wins you over with its visual lushness and tremendous artistry.

Everyone is raving about this movie like they've never seen a Tsui Hark Hong Kong movie before. Well this may be a bit more Americanized, yet it's still subtitled. Yes many of the fight scenes are awesome (with cute girls!), still prepare to settle into some slow spots. Half of the ending was good, the very ending, well, i don't care for that sort of thing.

Sets the standard for epic martial arts films. CT,HD features some of the greatest acting and action in the genre. The cinematography though, is the highlight. From visionary choreographer Yuen Wo Ping, made famous by his work with the first Matrix film, the characters often become weightless in their battles, making for some of the most gorgeous sword fights ever filmed. Propelling the film's story is an aching tale of unobtainable love and the difficulty of being a both a warrior and a lover.

Now I am not one for Kung Fu and always this mystical flying around garbage, but this movie was dazzling, stunning, and a excellent feast for all senses. Don't think that it is going to be all action and don't think it is going to be all love story it is multi-layered and very approachable for a foreign film. This is one of those Asian films that comes along and opens people up to new ways of doing movies, but it can be a little flat and stalls at certain points. quite normal for asian films.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon took what Rumble in the Bronx did for Chinese cinema in America and showed us Chinese film. Ang Lee's direction of this beautiful film made him a household name and got his foot in the door for a lot of hit and miss projects during the early 2000's. The relationship between Yeoh and Chow is beautiful. I really like that it is an adult relationship but there is something very adolescent about it as well. Zhang's addition to the dynamic is interesting as well.
