A decent crime-drama that unfortunately never really peaks. I enjoyed the slightly noir-ish atmosphere.

The story didn't really suck me in nor did it keep me enraptured (or maybe I just didn't care), hard to pay attention when everyone is standing there stiff as a board. A rather motionless motion picture...

"Croupier" boasts a compelling narrative anchored by Clive Owen's exceptional portrayal. Those seeking high-octane thrills may find the film's measured tempo a departure from their usual preference. However, this film is worth watching for fans of engaging storytelling delivered with skill.

Solid psychological drama with Owen shining and carrying the film as a writer who struggles to separate the casino world he is using for his writing from his own life. Voice over narration isn't something I'm generally fond of, but for the most part Croupier gets away with the frequent and heavy usage. Feels like a movie I'd have to see again to put together some of the pieces as there are a few plot points which seem to be deliberately ambiguous and open to interpretation.

Fun movie with material dear to my heart, gambling. I enjoyed it but felt like the coincidences and twists in the last quarter took it down a couple notches… B

There's something satisfying about the way this film so straightforwardly applies the tone and atmosphere of film noir to a contemporary 90s setting. Terrific work by Clive Owen.

tonally this is a big misfire, especially with the unintentionally funny voice-over.

Along with Clive Owen's smooth performance, the casino scenes are the highlight. The neo-noirish plot never fully engaged me, and the final twist was one too many.

Gambling, writing, deception and truth are very heavy themes that work so well together in this film. It does suffer to a degree under it's own weight, and in the end loses some of the power it had potential to deliver, but overall Croupier is a good drama!

A few interesting ideas squandered by a meandering, aimless plot that takes some truly baffling turns in the final 20 minutes. Clive Owen is decent as the detached, impassive protagonist, but the rest of the cast turn in some extremely ropey acting performances. I expected to like this more, given its reputation, but found it pretty unsatisfying.

First caught this in the middle of an insomnia-spell, heightening it's nihilistic, neo-noir stylings. Didn't seem quite as good later but... memories.

Croupier is Mike Hodges 1998 neo-noir gem.It stars Clive Owen as a writer/croupier in a perverse tale of addiction, sadism and cynicism.Owen's narration flows over the movie giving it a surreal effect that we cannot shake even after the credits roll.Paul Mayersberg characters are all stereotyped to the letter, offering an ironic point of view that shapes Jack's the writer creation of Jake the croupier, the subject of his new book. The film offers a large palette of the crime genre, most specific the

It's all numbers, the croupier thought. Spin of the wheel, turn of the card, time of your life, date of your birth, year of your death. In the book of Numbers the Lord said, "Thou shall count thy steps."

The movie that made Clive Owen. Small wonder. Embodies many of the virtues of smaller films, including the cynicism you rarely find in movies over a certain budget, and lots of canny little observations and characterizations
