Disney continues to grave-rob their own IPs in the name of a quick buck. This time, they try to make the titular future puppy-killer sympathetic by turning her into Harley Quinn - but you know, for kids! Obviously a misbegotten project that was doomed from the start - and yet, people still flock to this crap in droves, so what the hell do I know? Cool soundtrack though.

Shortest meeting ever in a Disney office. The pitch: "So, it's a live-action remake of a classic animation and the opening act kicks off with our villain-turned-misunderstood-anti-hero-to-be witnessing the death of her parent when she's just a little kid and..." Disney suits: "YES!!!"

Over-the-top inane and silly with touches of slapstick, all to make victimhood an acceptable excuse for one's bad behavior. First, Estella (the future Cruella) is subject to a string of white, male, incompetent authority figures who unwittingly precondition her for the ultimate baddie, the Baroness. It's hard to go any further into this prequel without some spoilers, but suffice it to say that this Cruella bares no resemblance to the once and future puppy killer. Disney has turned stereo

This was fun, just not in the intended way. Fiancé is Korean and hadn't seen the 101 Dalmatians animation. So, we watched this 2021 "film" and Cruella became her hero. "She's so cool". Ok great. Then we watched the '61 animation. Glorious confusion! Entertainment for me! But, it was clear from even young hot girl reactions, that while the 2021 film was "zomgz so cool", the 1961 anime packed more emotional purchase. 2021 film? It seems hip and the fat man is funny. But it's fkn vacuous shit.

I enjoyed Cruella's punk-rock aesthetic and soundtrack. Thompson & Stone's performances are great, while Fry and Hauser give some convincing depth to the henchmen. The problems with the film lie in its conceit that Cruella needed an origin story; it's part The Devil Wears Prada (which I liked) and part family drama that was unconvincing at best (and would have fit perfectly on ABC's Once Upon a Time). As a standalone it's enjoyable and fun, but it doesn't quite fit into the classic animation.

A retelling more than a prequel, apparently. As is, it's actually not bad; in fact, I would say it's fun. A pretty good soundtrack that sometimes relies a little too heavily on song recognition (but still uses some songs exceptionally well) and a great performance by Stone. Jasper and Horace need credit cuz Jasper brings heart and Horace is the only funny one. Obviously the pooches are the stars though because they are good boys. Certainly expected less from this.

This film exemplifies the marriage between Disney & Marvel. It's superior to Joker as an origin story that shows someone going from outcast to antihero to full-on supervillain. Emma Stone is cool, and the picture has a great commentary on processing death. It loses points for an annoying Guardians of the Galaxy/Baby Driver soundtrack that forces nostalgia like a jukebox musical. And the director's love for Scorsese is evident in his appreciation of psychos and tracking shots. Still, recommended.

(Rewatch: more fun) A fun film that never really feels like they cared about the time period. The Emmas carry this film, but it's 90% eye shadow. I want explanations for plot holes or future developments. Seeing more minority characters is overdue but still a surprise. Distracting soundtrack. A lot of unnecessary explanations right after key events/twists. Most blockbusters could cut 20+ minutes, but this one could have cut more. Fav scene: long tracking shot of the department store.

A very high concept punk rock vibed origin story about a character that was already a villain. It just did not impress me with the lavish style and the over exaggeration. The aesthetic also did not please me as Disney continues to push that they can also be edgy and confrontational. What point does this movie prove? What purpose does it have? Neither of those questions are answerable so this movie ultimately does nothing.

So they try to make Cruella this misunderstood character, who really isn't all that bad, but all they end up doing is screwing up the motivation for the original character. If she's not such a bad person....why the fuck does she end up skinning dogs for their furs in the future? That's serial killer shit right there. Emma Thompson is by far the best part of the movie as The Baroness. The awesome soundtrack bumps this up a few points.

I originally scoffed at those saying this was the best Disney Live Action "remake"....but after I scored it, I have to agree. I think it's tied for me with another one, but this is definitely worth the watch. It's surprising how well-crafted it is, from the hair, makeup, production and set design, to the sultry voice that I've never heard from Emma Stone, to the origin story of this character we all love to hate...there's not much to actually dislike here.

Musics (you should watch it with Shazam btw!), costumes hairstyle and makeup... can only describe it as great, it was a visual feast. However, story is a little predictable and you understand what will happen after the beginning scenes. Emma Stone's performance..meh..she isn't my fav actress obviously and i always keep my expectations low from her but she made me a little happy in this film. She is a woman who can be beautiful in every way and you see it. Did i mention that the musics is great?

A decent try at re-imagining a Disney villain, but it feels like it's just trying to ride too much on Marvel funny films. The plot is going all over the place and it relies much more on visuals and music than actual plot. Nice music, though. Must have cost a lot. Should have just killed those dogs.

This one puts up quite a daring show, combining a basic Disney princess story with classic heists, a fantastic rock soundtrack, light humor with dark personalities, a lot of visual spectacle and a few nicely orchestrated pivotal dramatic moments. It's still a movie that lacks substance, but I don't think anyone would mind watching it.

The first 20 minutes are absolutely dire. Dreadful origin story goop, nonsensically edited, with ugly CGI-laden visuals in artificial environments. The last 35 minutes aren't much better. However, the 70 minutes inbetween are genuinely breezy and enjoyable. It becomes The Devil Wears Prada mashed up with The Prestige and the results are surprisingly amiable. For all its many faults, I had some fun with this and that's more than I can say for nearly any of the other Disney remakes/spin-offs.

Cruella is Girlboss Fast and the Furious. You can't think about the plot for long, it has a lot of convinces and holes in it. But damn if it's not somehow big dumb fun. Everyone goes for the camp and the costume designs being 10/10 really help highlight just how ridiculous it goes. But the real stars, Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are given great material to just go crazy with. In the battle of the Emma's we all win. Surprisingly their characters do have a decent enough arc.

Disney attempting one of it's most controversial characters is certainly interesting. Despite being inconsistent to its material for obvious reasons, I actually think this is really cool. I like a lot of the tone balance, the beautiful cinematography, and both Emma's performances. Stone was phenomenal and Thompson gave Disney one it's best villains in awhile. It has some issues, but I thoroughly enjoyed this and I'm curious to see what they do next with the character.

Turns out when you throw enough talent at a horrible idea some decent parts stick - the first two acts of this movie are UNBELIEVABLY fun, with Emmas Stone and Thompson clearly having an amazing time devouring the scenery, while Gillespie’s gonzo style loses surprisingly little in the Disneyfication process. The third act drags pretty badly tho. Ending seems to indicate that Pongo and Perdy are from the same litter, so is the sequel going to be Cruella trying to prevent Dalmatian incest?

The writing and characterization in this movie is insufferable in a cringeworthy attempt to make a puppy killer seem lavish and justified in her villainy. The plot beats are astonishingly moronic, where twists are layered on top of other twists to justify even stupider plot beats. The film is constantly telling us how Cruella is this oh so brilliant woman whom we should all admire but often times the plot has to make up contrived bullshit for her actions to seem morally justifiable.

As a fan of leather dommes & Vertigo-style comics that take B-list characters & reconstruct them into something more interesting, I really liked this. I'm not sure I'd want a child to learn the morality here (revenge pays & nastiness helps), but it worked for me. There is some formula here & dear god do they lean heavily on a budget-busting soundtrack, but this gets surprisingly dark & mature, especially the nature vs nurture? twist, which I never saw coming thanks to misdirection at the start.

Really entertaining with so many visually creative and memorable scenes. Well done to the Production Designers! Taking a notorious but relatively one dimensional villain and performing them recognisably but more sympathetically is a difficult task but Stone's effort is more than admirable here. Cruella would have been better served with some incisive tailoring around the mid section where things sagged a little, but this stylish effort still swaggers gloriously down the Cat ... I mean Dogwalk!

Basically trying to clap Harley Quinn and Meryl Streep from Devil Wears Prada into one character... a lot of the scheming and heist and lethal pranking elements all feel pretty half-assed, especially leading into the final encounter. Pretty cool soundtrack though, Emma Thompson clearly having an amusing time camping it up Disney villainess style. CGI dogs also look quite good through the whole picture, gotta admit.

I feel like it would have been better if it wasn't tied to 101 Dalmatians. Standard "hey remember this detail?" moments didn't work for me - they really never do - and the plot of the earlier movies does undermine the character's arc. Also the CGI was dogshit but that is a common Disney problem lately for some reason.

Cruella has so many flaws that eventually it turns into a silly movie. But, when it comes to cinematography, costumes, or acting, this is a powerhouse! Especially Emma Thompson as the Baroness looks divine! Overall, it's an interesting film to provide an insight into one of the most iconic villains. Not so surprisingly, Cruella follows in the footsteps of Joker by portraying her as humane as possible. This is the new fashion, you know.

Flagrantly cynical looting of the Disney archive begins promisingly; Stone is as good anyone at suggesting dark depths behind a sunny façade, and Thompson is ideal as a sort of “Devil Wears Dalmatians”. Unfortunately Gillespie’s direction is overcooked, swinging his camera to point of vertiginous for no apparent reason, and throwing a comical number of needle drops into the mix, ranging from on-the-nose to inexplicable. Beautiful production design and costumes at least makes it easy on the eyes.

Every minute past the point you know it should end feels like a dog’s age. Far too long, and never have I seen a film so clearly meant to be something else smooshed into another IP with so little tonal regard. There were so many music cues I was starting to wonder when Sympathy for the Devil shows u…yup there it is. Even great overall acting still underuses Mark Strong, but the costume design is a treasure - improves as a double with Liquid Sky, if you’re willing to fuck the IP for a bit.

Joker'in kadın versiyonu gibi gözükse de, içindeki intikam ateşi bambaşka. Kırılma noktasından sonraki değişim kaçınılmaz. Dalmaçyalı takıntısı da bu filmde anlatılmış. It's one of the less soulless of the soulless Disney live action remakes, mostly because they made up much of the story. Though there is still the huge plot hole of how a "nice" person turns evil, of course, not fully addressed even if they tried to explain her behaviour. I'm more generous with kids' movies, but it seems to be suitable for older audiences too. One fun thing was the maybe very uneven, but interesting attempt at doing the '70s. They think -- producers, of course; gotta love PWH having fun, and Emma does what she can with such an all over script -- they are doing bits with tons of cliched songs and crane shots in glossy parties, but this is indeed just a calculated, monetized mayhem so Disney can get away with a reboot of a long forgotten property. It's kind of glorious how this consumes 137min to SOUND edgy without actually not getting even close - oh, not evil at all, just mommy issues, come on, and bad genes, too lol

It's probably the best you could possibly do if you start from the premise of making a movie where Cruella is the protagonist. The Emmas are both great. The style is here, with the costume design being appropriately grand. The direction and soundtrack add to the strong atmospheric elements. But the story is just a total mess, which was completely inevitable given the impossible task of making her sympathetic.

I don't care for every dog in each shot being CGI, I don't really care for a split personality take on the character, I understand we are supposed to sympathize with the character but a split personality seems like a bit of a stretch. I was into the idea that Cruella wholeheartedly embraces the fact that she’s a manic “schizo”. The origin story empathizes with her, but doesn’t try to completely whitewash her (in the like of Maleficent). The reason she hates Dalmatians, however, is dumb and forced. It would have suited her chaotic madness better if her distain merged from something super trivial and random. Now the pathos of her hatred is just… soap operally silly. Gorgeous outfits tho. Great fashion porn.

So much is wrong. The transition from lovable outcast to abusive boss is too brutal to be credible. The movie is an origin story that explains very little about why the character ended up as the villain in the original animated film. Most characters are one-dimensional. And yet... And yet, the movie is often plain good fun, has a great sense of fashion and is beautifully shot. So it's impossible not to like it, at least at a superficial level.
