This one is a strange beast, it never really feels like it's a fully self-aware mockery of musicals, or greasers, or the 50's. As a result, it comes off as unintentionally hyperbolic, like it was written with only knowledge of superficial tropes as a template. The songs aren't very catchy, but it is reasonably entertaining, I guess.

Next to Waters' 70's films, Cry-Baby, his first studio film, is comparatively tame, but it's an affectionate parody of 50's teen rebellion films that shares the same enthusiasm as his more radical works for quintessentially American pop cultural ephemera and a genuine love for radicals and/or outsiders. It's a deliberately hammy musical comedy with energetic songs performed with real gusto and youthful exhuberance. Depp shines in an early role as an amusing cross between Travolta and Elvis.

Viewed May 29, 2016. It's like Grease from Hell, trading in Broadway catchiness for rock 'n' roll sleaze. Depp is like a bizarro James Dean, his oversized emotion matched by his ironic detachment. Cry-Baby is surreal, charming and funny, but sometimes it is a bit much. I admire its weirdness, but all things considered, it isn't really my kind of weird. It started to feel like an exercise more than anything else. Too self-conscious, maybe. Manufactured campiness can only go so far.
