An interesting examination of Jazz and the U.S. in the late 50s. The framing device is pretty weak though, in part because it's too blunt and in part because the acting is terrible. Luckily most of the runtime is a marriage of images, sound and narration that evokes some intriguing ideas.

Its flaws are clear enough that I needn't bother mentioning them. This movie made me want to stand up & cheer.

In a similar vein to Wynton Marsalis's ideas about jazz--including the desire to educate and promote the music. Both bring an earnestness that can become tiresome, and Bland''s seem a bit grandiose as well. The film uses a dramatic and heavy-handed discussion between members of a jazz club to convey it's message. Wished it had more discussion about the music and less social theorizing.
