Cryptozoo

It’s certainly the most visually dazzling film I’m likely to see this year, but I was missing the laughs of Shaw's previous film. Cryptozoo is a lot more plot focused than MEHSITS, but neither the characters nor the story are particularly engaging, despite the mayhem promised by its premise. On the occasions when Shaw reverts back to the morbid delights of his 2017 film, Cryptozoo works. Instead, it’s a bizarre and unique film that gets bogged down by its less bizarre and unique mechanics.

Ugly, utterly mystifying mumbo-jumbo is a hollow, monotonous mess more or less from start to finish, with some occasionally interesting character designs overwhelmed by the hideous execution. A fair to middling voice cast further drag down proceedings with colourless and drab performances. Ugh.

Interesting ideas are sprinkled into a straight forward, very ordinary storyline without ever exploring the contrast arising from there. When even cryptids are not explored in any length and all the dialogues are cliche placeholders, what is left is just a fragment of potential buried in a boring narrative.

It gets a lot better as it goes on but the beginning is slow going. Bad: some of the voice actors are awful, there's some really hokey dialogue, and sometimes the animation style makes scenes look a little silly. Good: it's an excellent plot, explores its themes well, some complicated characters, does hit a satisfactory emotional crescendo, usually the animation style works really well, making everything feel fantastical. Don't see this style often. Still a lil disappointed as a whole though.

Cryptozoo captures an authentic 70's pulp vibe but not in a good way. Psychedelic colours, spinning frames, hippies vs. the military would have all been fine aspects had the dialogue not been tryingly delivered in a whining monotone & all the characters aggressively unlikable. The insufferable saviours are on par with the autocratic warmongers, and given the ending that probably was Shaw's point, but is undermined by the chaos wrought. The music is fine, the animation perhaps an acquired taste.

İlginç ama çok basit. Karikatürize animasyon. Sevgili çift, ormanda tellerle kaplı 1 yer bulur. Telin arkasında esrarengiz canavarlar vardır. 2 ayrı öykü anlatan film, toplumsal olarak yıkıcı olanın, insanlar olduğu anlatılmış. Farklı anlatım tarzı, büyüleyici ve enteresan olsa da, dıştan görünen tehditlerin bedelini ödetiyor. Bir nevi uzaylı ve Jurassic Park'ın ana fikri kullanılmış. Filmin sonunda, parktan kurtulma. Acayip hayvanlara benziysen.
