It's an honest and melancholy look at the lives of two artists who have struggled in life, love, and work, but doesn't ultimately feel like a downer, because neither Ushio or Noriko has any quit in them, and their struggles to stay afloat and find success in their work is inspiring.

I have high hopes for Cutie. Yeah, that insanely high rent will do you in every time.

The subjects: fascinating. The tale: well-told. The rent: too damn high.

A well done documentary about an interesting subject. I especially liked both credit sequences.

A colourful, moving and very likeable documentary about a married couple in the art scene in New York City.

It would be easy to see their story as the story of a bad husband and a bad marriage, but as is often the case, it's not that simple. Ushio is clearly not a malicious person, but more too self-involved to see Noriko's perspective.

I always put off watching this because of the oh so quirky title but then it was recommended somewhere so I tried it out of sheer boredom. It's exactly as I imagined it - a pair of New York hipsters struggling to pay the rent and we're supposed to care because they're old and "artists". Pair of wankers produce unsaleable art and live in one of the most expensive cities on the planet and we're supposed to be sympathetic. This is a very particular genre of documentary and I can't stand it

I mean these are honestly very typical low-income screw ups with all their addictions delusions and depressions with the only new addition being that they claim to be "artists". Ive known and known of countless couples just like this except they aren't artists, they're just typical. So i guess i dont get art and i didn't get any insight into either artists or the barely surviving poor people either.

Amazing directing / editing to bring meaning to the mundane. A lot of truth stitched through this. More than a documentary.

Watching this on the same day as AN AUTUMN AFTERNOON made it seem there were connections to be made between Shinohara and The Gourd.

It seems there is some talent between these two artists, but I am not a fan and this movie bored me intensely.

Starts off as a documentary about husband and wife artists, but shifts toward the wife, specifically about getting some success after sacrificing so much for her husband. ps71

A gorgeous and complicated love story about art.

Had reservations about it in the beginning but it ends up being an extremely interesting look at life. Especially in terms of "Cutie" (Noriko) who is a melancholy person who is trying to recapture her dreams. Her story really spoke to me in a profound way.

A look at two flowers in one pot fighting for nutrients and light in a very difficult (expensive) New York City climate. While both Ushio and Noriko have had problems giving their respective lives meaning, it seems clear that one of them is more malnourished than the other, which makes this documentary rueful and unexpectedly sad.
