Cynara

An effective drama about adultery when the good man Ronald Colman bewilders himself out of his element and falls for a young girl when his wife Kay Francis is out of town. You can see Colman & Francis have a rock solid marriage, yet it happens, and you can't help but feel sorry for them both. Well written, well timed, but not a masterpiece. And it was interesting to see the usually gallant old gentleman Henry Stephenson play the dirty old pig who sort of pushes Colman in the tragic direction!

I suspect that the main reason I like this film as much as I do is because I see a lot of myself in Jim Warlock; or perhaps more accurately, much of my ought self in this most intelligent and ethical of men (particularly when it comes to matters of the heart). But it also must be said that the writing (based on various pieces of source material) is tight and to the point as is Vidor's directing of the both funny and poignant cast who deliver their lines with both wit and sincerity.

Got better and better as it went along. Ending is not what I would have done but hey, some people like happiness.
