In 1950, at night, a passenger train kills a man on the tracks. He is Orzechowski, an engineer since 1914. An inquiry immediately follows. Testimony takes the form of flashbacks. The station master, believes Orzechowski was a saboteur. The young engineer on the train that hit Orzechowski, gives more complicated testimony about the dead man - stiff-necked, proud, imperious, critical of Zapora and other younger workers. (imdb)

Orzechowski is at first portrayed as a stubborn character who refuses to change with the times, but gradually his humanity is unveiled in a fine performance by Opalinski. It's a sly commentary on Communism and the people it leaves behind, supported by some excellent photography. There's also a bit of a Rashomon factor as the interviews sometimes consist of unreliable narrators, but in this case the onscreen action contradicts their testimony. I did find the film a little draggy, though.
