There's a great movie in here lost in too many awkward cuts and disjointed segments. The direction is solid and the story is fine enough, but the script just isn't as polished as you'd like to see from Spike. I wonder if the release was rushed for timeliness considering the current state of the USA. Editing is lacking, soundtrack was harsh. There's a few poor performances too, though Clarke Peters is great and Delroy Lindo in particular is sensational. He elevates the movie to recommendable.

Spike Lee: Holly-weird is so lame, trying to go back and win the Vietnam War by saving some imaginary POWs in their fugazi Rambo and MIA movies. Also Lee: I'mma gonna make a Vietnam movie where black veterans go back to find a chest of gold and symbolically earn their liberty for all black men. Sheeeeeeeeeit.

I'm beginning to feel like, in his age, Spike Lee has begun to let his ego run the camera. With "Da 5 Bloods" he divulges in to many directorial excesses to produce a cohesive run. I found my suspension of disbelief broken by bizzare tonal shifts, weird, unnecessary fourth wall breaks, and a disjointed shoehorning in of a Black Lives Matter group in at the end. I can't fault Lee for trying to push an agenda, but he's clearly lost his chops.

Guilt and gold, reparations of spirit. Delroy Lindo's gripping performance counts for a lot and Spike's loose style works for me, despite some careless action sequences and needlessly on-the-nose references (was he calling back his own Nike ad during Ride of Valkyries?). Old guys still being old in flashback makes more sense than a clunky CGI compromise but it can't help turning into Wild Hogs: Platoon at times. Maybe Dave Chappelle said it best - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEFaECX2n-U

Ho boy, I have a lot of respect for Spike, but this was some lazy storytelling. It has some promising premise, but then it all goes all over the place with all the war cliché, confusing music and no emotional connection.

While it's far from perfect (cloying orchestral score, poorly-shot action sequences, some questionable plot turns), there's a lot to chew on character-wise, and Lee's passionate, idiosyncratic direction is something to behold as always.

UQFR #129: Spike Lee offers a fresh perspective on the Vietnam War by examining the oft-overlooked Black veterans, who were concurrently fighting a more personal war in America. It's a timely critique of US race-relations, which remains as broken as it was in the past. Politics aside, Lee pays homage to Viet War films & Sierra Madre and gives us a towering performance from Delroy Lindo in a MAGA hat, accentuated by an all Marvin Gaye soundtrack. It's not perfect, but it's hopeful & cathartic.

A group of US veterans go to vietnam recover a huge amount of gold - they see the gold as a reparation for all the misdeeds of the american government/society against black people. There's a racial narrative, but there's also the personal story of the characters. The psychological and character narrative are the best part of the story. There are some embarrassingly bad acting moments, the production is lazy, the action scenes lame.

cheap straight-to-video feel, some bad acting, eye-rollingly hamfisted scenes, preachiness, cookie cutter orchestral horns from a 1997 stock music CD. a really cool premise, I wish it would've been done by someone who had the skill to do it seriously and with the gravity it deserved. spike lee is a little nerd who grew up rich and got made fun of for it by other poorer black kids and has been trying to make up for it ever since.

This was pretty disappointing. Lots of drawn-out scenes with not much going on, and a strangely simple story that slowly meanders for 2.5 hours. One of Spike Lee's weakest films in my opinion.

Spike continues his role of teacher, poet, provocateur, visual artist, and storyteller with a movie that is like 150% movie. This thing is full. There are so many topics covered and THEN you throw in a Treasure of the Sierra Madre plot line on top of it all. The great moments of monologue and camera work often get stifled by the robust messaging and Lindo's leviathan of a performance.

Lee wants to do SO much here. Pontificate on race, on war, on colonialism, on brotherhood, on current politics, on history... And all of it while remaking Treasure of the Sierra Madres AND Missing In Action AND Bridge on the River Kwai. And he mostly pulls it off, despite cheap-looking effects and a really messy script. Cut one or two of approximately seven different ideas out of this and this could have been the best Vietnam film in decades. As it is, Peters and Lindo carry Lee very far.

A hugely flawed film that is hugely ambitious. Despite its big pacing issues and its cliches and its overwrought commentary tenuously linked to reality, this presents a humanistic tale that breaks borders of identity, despite this buried treasure acting as a metaphor for looming tensions between these two past adversaries. Astonishing filmmaking and performances that earnestly present these themes make this a very clunky film that's also beautiful and full of heart.

Some of the most atrocious musical choices I've seen in a movie, they zapped the scenes of all drama or emotion. Terrible editing, awkward transitions. Feels like a bad TV movie at times, some of the editing is like a mediocre Youtube video. I've defended militant commentary but he goes a little too far here. Lindo is great but his character is unevenly written. Action sequences mostly suck. Too long for what it was. Lee wasn't right for this story. 2nd half is a bit better than 1st.

Bulletproof - in a good way. While romanticizing and deconstructing his own imagery Lee is able to differentiate between the importance of discourse/dialectic while also sometimes stopping and saying: No, this is fucking simple! Shit is insane! And I'm mad! Which elevates both strategies of storytelling. Lee, as an activist and as an artist, never wants to choose: genres, moods, thoughts. Everything is always changing and evolving. What a rich experience D5B is. It will outlive any news cycle.

The first half of the film feels stretched, the editing kind of clumsy, but tension ratchets up as the characters leave the path and the final hour is absolutely packed with shocks, symbolism, and profundity I am sure I will never fully understand. The film borders on parable in this latter half as folks turn on a dime from abhorrence at gruesome murder to nonchalant greed, but it's deeply provocative and layered here: so much to parse and very unique.

Striking cold-open aside, the first half feels clunky and even dull at times. Post-retrieval picks things up with violent tension (see the mine scene) and emotional character work (see Paul's solo soul journey) but it's difficult to parse out all the character motivations and plot threads in the chaos. In the end, its compelling, complex themes (past into present day war[s], greed on top of racial tension) and powerful symbolism (see Norman's almost Christ-like figure) leave plenty to chew on.

Easily Lee's finest work in 14 years, but it's a typically rambling, tonally uneven mess. It seems more personal than Klansman though, and the characters are better drawn and somewhat relatable. Lindo gives his best turn in recent memory, and it's mix of racial commentary, war and genre, while messy, is more satisfying than Miracle, although the action scenes are wildly inferior, and like that film it would have benefited immensely from a tighter edit and a better framing device.

Not among Lee's best work, but still interesting and a refreshingly different take on the Vietnam War genre. Expect Oscar noms for Lindo and Boseman. This film feels like two different ones stitched together, one, a thoughful, powerful exploration of the American relationship between racism and war, and the other, a fun B-rate wartime action film, but those two parts never quite feel like they blend together congruously, resulting in abrupt tonal shifts.

I'm utterly at a loss to understand how much acclaim this movie has received. I loved KKKlansman so was excited for this, but with a meandering story, many telegraphed plot points and even Lindo's lauded performance appearing over the top to my eyes, this comes across as one of Lee's worst directorial efforts.

It's often bloated and flawed, but nevertheless powerful jungle fever, gold rush, Vietnam war adventure through the perspective of racial injustice and war traumas that won't let go with time. Lindo's performance is a blast. Gaye's What's Going On has never been used in such a caring, bright, moving way in a motion picture. Brotherhood, friendship and family in a whirlwind of love, pain, sacrifice and hope.

I was just thinking to myself, what if Spike Lee remade Rambo 2 but with a look on black voices in both current and Vietnam day. Glad he delivered this. It was a good film, the mix of real world imagery mixed into the movie helped cement some of the violence and horrors. In some cases in back fired and made it feel hypocritical. Delroy Lindo deserves an oscar for his performance and carries the movie on this back for portions of the film, especially when in scenes where there is no subtlety

Spike Lee'den muhteşem 1 ağıt. 5 kankalar, Vietnam Savaşından sakladıkları altınları ve ölen dostunun cenazesini ülkesine götürmesini anlatıyor. İlginç 1 konuya sahip olmasına rağmen, politik duruşunu alkışlıyoruz. Hiçbir şeyden taviz vermeyen ve kaypak olmayan 1 yönetmen. Chadwick Boseman kısa ama etkili oynamış. A step down from BlacKkKlansman, but still enjoyable. The main problem is the length, feeling far too drawn out, especially on its first half. The climax is also disappointingly short for a film at this length. The switch to the second half is extremely predictable, but considering I enjoyed the second half I can’t complain too much. It’s not a must see, but it’s a good way to kill two and a half hours.

First of all, the story is unique and impressive. As for the movie, I had a little disappointment. When the story is good, and the director is Spike Lee, my expectation was spontaneously high. However, the movie was technically inadequate and unnecessarily long, which caused irregularities in the flow. Musics and scenes were not good balanced. So a movie that can be perfect remains only mediocre.

When the whole script sounds exactly like how Spike talks in interviews, you know it's about to be a banger. A fiery return to form as Spike reckons not only with the Vietnam legacy on Black America, but also on the mythos of the classic treasure hunt/war film genres and how we see Blackness there. It's not perfect - the final shootout against VC baddies is standard Vietnam fare, and the Trump stuff is again too on-the-nose - but definitely the best war flick in recent memory.

I respect the ambition quite a bit, but this movie was all over the place. Delroy Lindo was great. Spike Lee has some fun with his formal flourishes, but they aren't enough to distract from the occasional blandness in mise en scene and scripting. Still, entertaining for the most part.

Many powerful moments here in Lee's riff on SIERRA MADRE crossed with APOCALYPSE NOW - that it doesn't quite come together as powerfully as it should is because of a lack of cohesive message - a long overdue showcase for Lindo provides a powerful portrait of the corrosive nature of greed, but is Lee linking this back to "President Bone Spurs"? Still resonates in the mind, especially thanks to Lindo, but that lack of cohesion (and overlength) almost outweighs the better parts.

A weak script and poor casting lead to some bad and uninspired performances. It feels more like a medium budget Hallmark movie than something that should be up for Oscar nods. I expected a lot more from a director that has the resume that Lee has. The whole thing feels sloppy and rushed.

I was prepared to hail this as another Spike Lee masterpiece when it was an intense character piece about the post-trauma of black experience in Vietnam as much as back home. It does get bogged down in action movie shenanigans played straight by old men, which are frankly hard to take seriously. But even through some of that silliness, it remains a master class of energetic editing and fourth-wall flourish, as all of this filmmaker's work is. In its greatest moments it is incredibly moving.

This is a movie where the Wikipedia article is better than the film. The move is a very important piece of cinema; highlighting the role of Black soldiers in the Vietnam war; something that was not told until now. Delroy Lindo's performance is tremendous. But most of the film is self indulgent and boring. Much too long and I really don't have any desire to watch it again.

It could have done with better editing and a shorter runtime. A lot is lost in between scenes that were unnecessary, so that if the acting is great and the script itself works, it drags on sometimes. Also, I felt that music was misplaced in some scenes that would have worked way better without it.

The movie has a lot going on but none of it really lands outside of Lindo's character, whose insanity and wild interactions create an interesting dynamic for both the identity politics of a post-Vietnam and the film's themes of greed. Otherwise, the film is inconsistent; there are scenes with beautifully developed tension mixed with plotlines that hold little substance blended in with some odd editing choices. I think the movie could have been phenomenal with a different set of priorities.

With more care, focus, and subtlety this could be a crowning achievement in Lee's career. Because there is a great concept here, with themes of brotherhood, race relations, the duality of war, and deep, dark life regrets. Instead, simply put, this is an overlong tonal mess of a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be. Lee is repeating himself and needs a fresh angle.
