Dalu

This has to be the worst way to mix comedy and drama. It's like they wrote two scripts for the same story, one a slapstick broad comedy, the other a nationalistic drama, and then randomly chose which script to use for each scene. Then as a bonus they threw in a few musical numbers in an otherwise silent film. It doesn't help that none of the comedy is funny even though it's trying so very hard to be. If you can bear the tonal dissonance the actual content is good and makes a decent silent drama.

Strange movie that mixed melodrama with comedy and adds a dash of musical in with this mostly silent film. It's a war film that ends with the message that you're only free when you're dead.

A Chinese silent with poorly added sound effects and barely audible songs. But It sure has it's rewards. It's a nice film about friendship as a gang of men get to know each other and shows the Chinese spirit being dedicated to build a road. But the preliminaries to World War II is going on with Japan invading parts of China and they are trying to stop the road building by bribing the foreman. The end is what hits hardest. Teasing a happy ending.... and then the brutalities of war....
