Dangerous Game

Intense meta drama exploring the relationship between art and life by juxtaposing a film-within-a-film with the volatile lives of its creative participants. Some ridiculous claims have been made for the complexity of this device--Israel's personal disintegration is perfectly in synch with the decline of his fictional characters--and the domestic drama is dull. Ferrara/St.John are clearly in way over their heads, but there is a concentrated fury to the main performances that makes it work.

if a magnum opus is a film that defines its creator and his legacy with complete honesty and comprehensiveness, then this film owns that label as hard as any ever has. i'd love to know how long nancy stayed with him after he cast her in this shit.

A film about film-making that explores art imitating life, and vice versa (perhaps this is autobiographical of Ferrara, which makes it even more meta). This isn't anything new, especially in movie form, but it's so well done here, mostly because it hardly feels formulaic and features three very strong leading performances, from Keitel, Russo, and Madonna -- the latter two being dual roles, highlighting the transition between acting and being.
