Dark Angel: The Ascent

Having expected some kind of softcore porn, Skinemax thriller I was really impressed. Although there's no actual antagonist or build up to a climax (the hero's inexplicably injured to raise the stakes), the script's worldbuilding for hell & demon motivation is utterly unique, compelling & worthy of being developed into a major studio production. The director also manages to make the most out of some subpar actors & an obviously tiny efx budget. I'd happily watch a sequel done by the same team.

This offers an offbeat, oft original twist on the angel/human love-story genre. With its successful blending of seemingly radically disparate elements -- terror, comedy, pathos -- the film comes close to capturing the loopy surrealism of a Hong Kong horror fantasy. Clever details abound, and this movie's images linger in memory long after the end credits roll.

Fantastic sensibilities and a good sense of humor to boot.

One of the better Full Moon pics, this is 85 minutes that just flies by and leaves you with a smile on your face. Oh, and also Angela Featherstone in your dreams.

Saw this for VHS night at Cinemagic, was a pretty good time

Wafer-thin on plotting, ends up a lurid looking, but fairly tame slasher. A few good quips and nice gory touches here and there but mostly underwhelming.
