Dark Was the Night

Would have also accepted "Light Was the Day," "Male Was the Sheriff," and "Scary Was the Monster." A problem with a lot of these "small town paranormal problem flicks" (STPPFs) is that the people in them always act so unnaturally, which is why I was pleasantly surprised to find the lead in DWtN to be a well-grounded, believable character whose motives and subsequent actions felt genuine. Not the best STPPF out there, but definitely one worthy of your time on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

I had the same feeling watching this as I did seeing that early 'wendigo' episode from "Supernatural" - basically, "Hey, this is actually a little bit better than I expected!". And that's just it: it's marginally better than you'd planned for, by just that tiny appreciable sliver and not more than that. It's not necessarily a good movie, but it's a minor twitch above tolerable - which fit the bill for me at the time. The tension was paced well, and the sheriff/deputy interplay was engaging.

I really liked this one until the very end. Overall, good acting and an eerie vibe.

They tease you for so long with how the monster might look that it's rather disappointing when it's revealed. Still, the journey there was enjoyable, filled with a good fear of the unknown.

It wasn't completely without charm but at 98 minutes long it should've been honed down to 80 considering the lack of budget and the limitations of the script
