Darkness on the Edge of Town

Interestingly, it's among the most feminist movies of recent times in that it neither embraces gender stereotypes nor reacts to them so intensely so as to either robotize or masculinize its female characters to a point of caricature. Instead, all the roles have some level of complexity, irrationality and pathos. That said, the film's a little contrived and a bit convoluted, but its unrelenting Cormac McCarthy-styled narrative and gorgeous photography make up for all the niggling frustrations.
