Mr. Kline Goes to Washington. Cute and pleasant, if insanely naive in its depiction of federal politics, but that's part of its gee-whiz charm.

Kline is charming, and the rest of the cast is able enough, but the childlike portrayal of government and how it works drags the film down at times.

Dated in it's naive interpretation of U.S. politics (I'm sure every president has wished the extent of their problems was keeping a homeless shelter open), but still charming and entertaining. Plus it's got Ving Rhames with hair.

Charming romantic comedy -- lots of moviemakers have attempted to modernize Capra themes, this is one of the very VERY few successes.

This film was a very clever variation of the romantic comedy. I liked it.

The underlying idea -- that one decent man could make a big difference should he just happen to make it to a high position, e.g., the Oval Office -- is really silly; nobody would ever manage to accomplish ANYTHING in Washington circles after burning as many political bridges as the "hero" does here. Like so many Hollywood movies, however, this is actually reasonably entertaining despite the large amounts of absolute bullshit

Occasionally painfully stupid in how it treats the audience's knowledge of American politics (this was pre-West Wing, after all), but it says some things about the way government is run that are even more valuable today.

Watching The West Wing has kind of ruined me for all films I watch about federal politics, which is a shame since I do really love the genre! But although this movie has its flaws, including Frank Langella being a one-dimensional cartoon villain and the number of real-life political cameos crossing the line from amusing to distracting, it's still a very clever fish-out-of-water concept that passed the time jollily.

Back then, you had to cover for the morally bankrupt, comatose stroke victim with an oblivious, "average joe" impostor. Nowadays you can have it all in one person, because who gives a fuck, we're ruled by companies anyway.

Kevin Kline rarely disappoints us, but he also very rarely overwhelms us with a performance. Such is the case with the modest but entertaining Dave.

Always an enjoyable movie to watch. It's a cute romantic comedy, but there's also some interesting points about politics as well. And while I can't totally agree with every political aspect, the politics don't get in the way of the movie and the story of the characters.:)

re-seen at 20-11-2010, still great & heartwarming. Quote of a friend of Dave who looks over the national budget: "Who does these books? If i'd handle finances this way with my bussiness, I would have been bankrupt many times!"

With such a contrived premise, this could have been god-awful. Yet, thanks to some good writing, and Kevin Kline's adroit, charming performance --and the wonderful chemistry with Sigourney Weaver (this just may be my favorite of all of her roles)--it works. Lots of fun cameos, but Helen Thomas rules! It makes me nostalgic for a time that maybe never existed, when there was civility in politics... and perhaps just a smidgen of honor.

A real feelgood movie. Watch this one if you wanna cheer up or just add to the sunshine you already feel. It's funny and heartwarming. "Man of the Year" is probably even better though in it's own different way, so if you like this one check that one out as well.

It's not bad in a movie-making sense but it's out-of-the-park bland and cornball. No balls on this thing whatsoever, no memorable dialog, no laughs, no moments. It just exists.

Dave is essentially a Disney fairytale aimed at adults. We have the young hero, played by Kline, who makes the movie work on his charm alone. A menacing villain with Langella; Weaver's the love interest, Dunn's the sidekick. We've got risk, transformation (though only of character), setbacks and sacrifice - there's even a song or two - all neatly wrapped up with a happy ending. The film's a decent RomCom, but the political content is naive at best and treated the way magic usually is.

Surprisingly this actually works in a West Wing meets The Parent Trap kinda way. The attraction here is Kevin Kline, who is simply a delight. I would completely understand if someone thought this was cloying or mawkish, and its not really all that funny, but if you lean in to the schmaltzy corniness and think of it as more of a light drama its actually sort of good.

It is a bit too simplistic, convenient, and cute. But the performances are good, especially from Kline, and it is an intriguing story.

If only Trump and Pence would have strokes and be replaced by Kevin Kline and Ben Kingsley. A film that is much better than it ought to be due to a superb cast (mainly Kline, Grodin, Weaver, Rhames, Kingsley and Linney).

Essentially this is "The Prisoner of Zenda" via Frank Capra in modern dress. That idea with this cast is pretty good, and the film works in a nice, very very simple way. I don't think all of our problems would be solved in the President was just a really nice guy, but it's nice to think that for a while.
