Effects and creature design give my inner fanboy an urge to climb something and yell, "This is the most awesome thing I've ever seen!" What makes it truly change the summer blockbusters game, though, are the emotions invested by the motion capture tech. Not only do the apes express their feelings convincingly, the script - to a large extent - prioritizes drama and subtext. We are, however, also treated to some killer setpieces (e.g., the tank scene). You, Matt Reeves, can be my wingape any time.

Matt Reeves has crafted a sequel that surpasses its better-than-expected predecessor in every imaginable way. The vividly characterized ape colony fully registers in this tense, visually immersive, and emotionally stirring follow-up, tackling issues of racial warfare, violence, and moral fallibility. It really gets into the deeply conflicted heart of ape (human?) nature. Easily joins the ranks of The Lego Movie and Godzilla in what I think has been a banner year for blockbuster films.

Shockingly great. I'm not sure if it's an honorific or a broader criticism of the industry, but CGI mo-cap has finally surpassed 1968's movie apes. Andy Serkis guides the entire movie into fertile emotional ground before the first words or human characters appear. It even makes a chimp on a horse with machine guns into an emotionally resonant moment. Reaches a quality not seen since the original, remembering the concept is more than a joke, but conducive to the exploration of human nature.

This script was utter garbage. I went in the theater happy to give them my money because I thoroughly enjoyed the first (an opinion I now question), but now I'm feeling buyers remorse. Just hammer home the ideas of a race war and monkey Jesus. With the near extinction of the human race and a small colony of monkeys fighting why are there Battle of Pelennor Fields number of people fighting? Why does Gary Oldman say, "Give me that rocket launcher!" Just an awful disappointment.

Destined to compete for my "Best of 2014" honor. What a movie. It's an experience that hits every emotional key, every action beat, every moment of calm and chaos, just, nothing is missed or missing. The human story is much better developed (both sides have lost). It may lack that one great standout performance (though the film is admirably performed throughout, especially by some of the ape characters). The degree to which this movie will make you FEEL is surprising and welcomed. What an honor.

Consistently engrossing and entertaining, thanks in no small part to the wonderful Andy Serkis. The human characters & storylines were mediocre at best (and I honestly wouldn't be upset if there's again a whole new cast of humans in the next entry), but thankfully, the focus remains on the vastly more compelling apes. Also, an extra point for Maurice!!

Am a huge fan of Rise and this installment just exploded in every way. Animation was breathtaking, emotion conveyed from the apes was exceptional. Human characters were used just enough and the gaps between action sequences were never wasted. And when the guns come out, it is just a fantastic ride, terrific soundtrack also. A hollywood blockbuster that doesn't belittle your intelligence, completely delivers on all fronts.

Absolutely stunning. Every moment was either sentimental or beautiful. The action is great, and the human acting could have been better but fit fine with the tone of the movie. The apes however were more than perfect. It's themes also stand out as they now reflect the modern understanding of racism and not the stereotyped understanding of the 60's. This is the best movie of the franchise and one of the best movies this year.

DOTPOTA is one of the best sequels I've seen in recent years. The first film felt like a teaser for bigger things to come. And this superior sequel surpassed my high and hopeful expectations. The pacing, character development and parallels between both human and ape characters make this film flow effortlessly. The whole cast is solid but in particular the craft of Andy Serkis & Tony Kebbell's motion capture performances as Caesar & Koba respectively is genius and technologically incredible.

There wasn't a moment that I didn't enjoy this movie, and for a lot of it I can honestly say I was in love with it. The beginning, before all the combat starts, is well-written and emotional. It's not the deepest social commentary in the world but it's done incredibly, and it's hard not to feel things... all the time. I was surprised with how much it turned me into a little baby. When the fighting happened it was good, but the highlight is before all that.

Fear really throws a wrench into things. The film focuses heavily on parallels and symmetry to its benefit. The opening and closing shots bookend it very tightly. There is a lot of grey area to explore and often goes without forgiveness of condemnation. Both sides have elements of justification as well as pigheaded, selfish stupidity. And while the action is exceptional, it is the little moments of calm and connection that tie it all together. Take a load off, Fanny.

Definite top 5 of the year material. Not without it's problems but the apes are so well realised, more so than 90% of Hollywood's 'characters' (which says a lot for the state of the current industry.) Put your stinking paws on me you damn dirty Andy Serkis.

Dour parable in a tragic key about all the threats and obstacles to peace: distrust, fear and resentment all beget populism, civil strife and the tyranny of generals, and these in turn lead eventually to all the horrors of war. Somewhat affecting and effective, with a certain amount of complexity and subtlety. Probably holds the record for most subtitles in a mainstream Hollywood movie not directed by Mel Gibson. But shouldn't "dawn" come before "rise" (the sun dawns before it rises, right)?

I loved this movie. The characters were so well developed and the pacing was fantastic. It's emotional without being melodramatic or cheesy. Neither the humans nor the apes as a whole were shown as completely good or evil and the "bad" individuals all had at least understandable reasons for their distrust of the other group. Action was outstanding and mo-cap was even better than the first. I literally have no complaints.

A film that is fundamentally interested in exploring where circles of altruism are drawn, & who is included, & who is not, & on what basis, & the moral compromises each redrawing entails. Interested in identity politics & the accompanying questions of purity & loyalty (a shuck-and-jive routine by the villain really brings out the racial undercurrents, but it's a pretty general parable). Like its protagonist, it's kind of solemn & weary; appropriately, the instances of violence land with a thud.

Well I personally thought this was fantastic. It truly has its cake and eats it too: It more than delivers in sheer blockbuster spectacle, but also presents a subtle, thoughtful portrait of characters trying desperately to PREVENT conflict. It's so fresh and different compared to other summer flicks. I'll also throw masculinity to the wind and admit it's the very first new movie I've seen to make me legit tear up since The Secret World of Arrietty. This new Apes series is so good, you guys.

Quite simply a triumph for both Reeves and the wizards of Weta Workshop. The director continues his tour de force of genres, this time mastering the sequel-prequel-summer blockbuster with a deeply engaging tale of good and evil vs. good and evil. As for Weta? Well they've pretty much rendered the phrase "no animals harmed in the production of this movie" useless.

Bring a flashlight. There's a part where people run out of a cage and this big heifer shoves her way past everyone and she was the greatest monster of all. It's been ten years people are scavenging and dirty and gross then there's that idiot. FAT SHAMING OUT OF NOWHERE. Wanted the apes to kill all the people in this, they're horrible it's a who's who of shitty background actors. Gary Oldman has been playing the same role forever. Yet another post-apocalyptic film shot in the standard Hollywood blockbuster formula: make things go boom and bang and sprinkle in a few quiet moments for "character development." Too bad the characters, save Caeser, remain one-dimensional and forgettable. It also takes itself much too seriously--and considering we're watchin a movie about apes--it's sure as hell chock-full of unintentional comedy. For whatever reason, this movie just rubbed me the wrong way. Due for a rewatch.

This movie is the perfect example that you dont need a million explosions to make a big summer action blockbuster! Everything about this film is fantastic with a special mention to the CGI/motion capture which has to be some of the best work I have seen on film. The story is incredibly captivating and you find yourself swept away in the emotion of the events on screen. Thankfully everything is setup for a third film because this leaves you wanting more. Highly-highly recommend!

Awe-inspiring from a technical perspective. Really. Not to pour on the hyperbole or anything, but the "performances" the apes give--registering shock, sorrow, regret, dread--are nothing short of breathtaking, and sustain the film through any slow or obvious stretches. Well worth seeing for the apes alone. The action and plot are kinda standard and predictable, I guess (if well-mounted), but...so much cool ape stuff! Watch it for the cool ape stuff!

The best summer blockbuster since the Dark Knight trilogy graced cineplex screens, and a new peak in the Planet of the Apes franchise. A perfectly paced sci-fi film that is heartfelt and moving in its slower scenes and intense and unnerving during the action sequences. Andy Serkis - already an incredible motion-capture performer in films like Lord of the Rings and King Kong - takes his acting to a new level and is deserving of all awards and acclaim that should be headed his way.

All your favourite apes are BACK! (That's you, Maurice.) That the bulk of this movie is a silent film centered on ape culture that is still dramatic & touching & funny is simultaneously ridiculous & amazing. Beyond the technical achievement of the apes, there are a pair of exceptional long takes here where the sustained shot perfectly emphasizes the brutality of war, à la Children of Men. Along with X-Men, it's the second summer movie of 2014 where our heroes work tirelessly to stop the action.

At the risk of sounding pedestrian, the worst thing about this movie is that it has monkeys riding on horses and shooting machine guns and absolutely no sense of humor. I'm not one to be outright dismissive but, really, how the fuck do you take this seriously? Maurce was awesome, though, as was the scene where the monkey shoots those two guards. Otherwise it's almost laughable how self-serious this is.

A very smart sequel. Everything from the characterization of each individual ape to the state of humanity is very logistic and realistic. Nothing groundbreaking as far as story, and in fact I'd have liked to see more plot involving the remaining humans, but the simplicity of the plot compliments the complexities of the characterizations and motivation. For real fans of "Rise/Apes", this one really hits home. A lot of heart and dedication from the motion-capture actors and crew.

The pace is a bit stop-and-go at times, but what undeniable achievements the tactility and character of the apes are! The key to the film's success is the opera of it all - the intrigue and shades of the quite Shakespearean drama, the visual majesty, the inquiry into war and peace among the tribes. There's a profound seriousness at work.

On the way home from the theater, realizing I was impressed with how it didn't suck, I had an existential crisis so great that even now I'm considering forcefully forgetting the last six theater films I've seen just so my taste can recover. Despite that, this film's pretty okay. A bit predictable and lacking power in the humans' acting but it manages to bring up the destruction of hate, control, and fear in an almost novel light while never once losing or making me want it to lose my attention.

The 2 prequels to POTA have been a brilliantly conceived chain of events leading to the main idea. "Dawn" is an incredibly well scripted, highly relevant, believeable story of good and bad on both sides and a clear metaphor for our current internicine wars. "Dawn" is nourishment for the brain and the heart, and has some truly touching moments, as well as some absolutely brilliant CGI, characterisation and action scenes. Like the 'Alien', Ceasar is a remarkable and unforgettable movie character

Dawn plays like one of the many 1968 sequels -- but in much better form. In this part slow-burner, part thrilling blockbuster, Reeves achieves some great images for a film that is completely absorbed by its main themes -- the impossibility of peace, the Darwinian inevitable presence of a dominant race. One close-up starts by leaving Caesar savage, painted-and-ready-for-war face. The other one wraps it up by getting closer to a sober, leading look. It simply saves the day.

It takes the post-apocalypse framework and substitutes in genetically modified apes instead of zombies, terminators, or marauding road warriors. Thankfully this doesn't go crazy with homages and is in fact a much darker film than expected. Caeser is very likable and CGI has now advanced to the point where it looks almost seamless. The plot seems almost like a classic western with one established group battling it out with newcomers. Now who are the cowboys and who are the indians in this?

I'm digging this new franchise a lot, and this is smarter and more thrilling than "Rise". I like that it takes its premise dead seriously; you actually care about Caesar and the other apes and it's shocking how rousing and exciting the action scenes are when the shit goes down. The CGI, sound design and motion capture performances continue to be scarily impressive, and the human story is more interesting than in "Rise". You know, I'm tempted to say this is even better than the 1968 one.

Criticisms of the plot and screenplay are not without foundation. It would be fair, if a little harsh, to say there are no surprises here in terms of a story or any of the characters; all of which are fairly archetypal of big-budget Hollywood. Nonetheless, everything is beautifully & vividly realised. Caesar & his apes are a technological marvel, & credit to Serkis in particular for the extra complexity he gives to Caesar. Additionally, this was simply exciting & engaging with great set pieces.

Without a doubt, the second best film of the franchise after the 1968 original. This sequal also justifies the shaky, and formulaic reboot in 2011, it's as if the Rise was just the stepping stone trying to get the reboot here. Disregarding yet another horrible title (I still get confused which is "Dawn of" and "Rise of") this was just as pleasantly well-made as the previous installment, even if it really doesn't progress the story that much. The POTA screenwriters continue with their reverse engineering of a franchise. Despite the two-plus hours of ape play, I'm still left with a number of questions: when did they develop their inate skill for abode construction? How about leather crafting? When did they adopt English accents and stop talking like Batman? Hopefully this will all get resolved before Charlton Heston shows up.

Not as good as the last one. It's a bigger movie, full of bigger CGI scenes. But I'm long past the point where throwing more stuff onto the screen impresses me. The story is a bit too run-of-the-mill white man bonds with natives, except here the white men are only 95% white and the natives are monkeys. Also it really bugs me that the previous film showing the dawn of the apes is called "Rise", and this one showing the rise of the apes is called "Dawn".

very well scripted. Best of the apes movies. Great cgi.

Rise was a surprisingly great movie so I went in with high expectations and it's just really disappointingly bad and shockingly boring. The script was awful and predictable as hell. Tries very hard to have these poignant emotional scenes but they fail and fail hard. Matt Reeves is just not my cup of tea I guess.

The apes look wicked as ever but the actors are terrible (i'm guessing the script they have to play along doesn't help)

uh uh. oooah uh uh uh. hoh hoh hoh hoh aaargh! translation: it's a well done movie. it just didn't grip me. i did not care for either side, there's nothing to relate to. the humans are too flat and generic, the apes are...apes. the "war" is kind of uncalled for and could've been easily avoided, although the movie succeeds in showing how often all it takes is some extremist douchebag and the stupid sheep who follow him.

Visually impressive, but the story is one we have seen way too many times before (for some reason Disney's Pocahontas kept springing to mind) about how humans as a whole are nice and peaceful except for a few evil bigots who manipulates the masses into war. Nice try, movie, but no, that's not how the world works.

10 years after the end of RISE, the apes are thriving and the remaining humans are growing desperate. A truce is attempted so that the humans may restore electricity to their settlement, but old resentments--and fear--upset everything. Tense, exciting follow-up, with fine action sequences and expertly handled character moments. The story isn't quite as strong (it's very much a "middle film" plot), and some of the supporting characters are thin, but Andy Serkis and Jason Clarke are both strong.

Superior to any other POTA film in every way. Great script, excellent acting and stunning visual effects. Highly recommended.

Out of this world CGI. Hard to believe that they aren't real apes. I liked the first one (Rise). But I found myself not really caring as it went along and resorted to twiddling my thumbs. Will the humans win? Will the apes? Will peace? I didn't really care. It was just a huge mass of apes and guns, kind of like Transformers with more fur.

I want Dawn of the Planet of the Horses; in which the horses rebel against being ridden by the apes and thus terrorise the planet.

Terrific acting and careful character-building makes this very engaging and exciting, even if you know in advance every turn the movie takes.

AKA proof that Hollywood really doesn't know any other conflict than "Cowboys vs Indians", only this time with a chimp playing the noble and wise Sioux chief. And where the hell did all those apes even come from? That said, technically it's amazing, and even if the main story is borrowed wholesale from "Land of the Dead", it works.

I don't love the Apes series with the passion of so many others, but there's no denying that is excellent blockbuster filmmaking: enchanting, enthralling, terrifying and jaw-dropping in equal measure, there or thereabouts. A pleasure.

Amazing creature design, stunning visuals and 39 emotional scenes with CGI monkeys. Which is around 35 too many.

How can you make a serious movie about talking apes and have it NOT be silly? I'm convinced that Dawn of the PotA has not, and will not age. Its engagement with themes of diplomacy and detterence will always remain topical, and as amazing the CGI already is, it will be improved and improved.. but there simply is no software solution for artistic vision. The last zoom shot which showcases Caesar's complexity as a character and creation, accompanied by the timpani, just screams movie classic to me

Very entertaining blockbuster. A lot is going on here, most of it unspoken. The human dialogue is as poor as always though.
