Love this classic Tom Cruise formula movie. Basically Top Gun NASCAR edition. Yes, we know how edgy you are for pointing out NASCAR is boring. That's why I watch movies about stock car racing instead of watching actual NASCAR. Fav scene: that turn 4 and the reveal.

Despite whatever their real life relationship was, Cruise and Kidman have zero chemistry on screen. Plus, auto racing is fucking lame.

I hate car racing movies and this did nothing to improve my opinion. The only part I liked was when they were racing in their wheelchairs. High, and probably wholly unitentional, comedy.

For a gun-tootin', high strung society as the Americas, they sure have amazingly dull sports, and none more so than the roundabout racing that is NASCAR. All of Scott's visual trickery cannot change this fact, and the formulaic script isn't even trying. Complaints aside my guilty admission is, that it has leapfrogged from being cool when I was a kid to a nostalgic childhood memory, skipping the phase where the banality of the whole thing makes you want to write the 80s out of the history books.

Vroom, vroom vroom. Before Cruise jumped the shark and Oprah's couch he did this flick. Some of the supposedly serious scenes did turn out to be unintentionally funny like when Cruise threatens his friend/opponent with a pool cue to go back to the doctors. The driving scenes weren't that bad. Maybe if I knew something about driving I could find faults with it, but I got to see a little of what goes on between the pit and driver. Closest I will ever come to actually watching Nascar.

Almost every Tom Cruise movie from 1985-1992 has an IDENTICAL plot: Brash young man with uncommon talent (insert cool profession here) is mentored by an older and wiser version of himself, while romancing a woman out of his league. I recommend viewing in this descending order of watchabilty: Born on the Fourth of July (soldier), Top Gun (fighter pilot), The Color of Money (pool hustler), Far and Away (settler), Days of Thunder (race car driver), Legend (warrior), Cocktail (bartender)...

Blatant knock-off of Scott/Cruise's own TOP GUN can't even reach GUN's modest peaks; with surprisingly little substance to the conflicts and character relationships, this ambles along in second gear, before revving up for an admittedly exciting (if truncated) finale. Cruise and Kidman share little to no chemistry together (and this may go down as Kidman's worst, most wooden performance); bless Duvall for being able to pull a few genuine moments from Towne (!!) and Cruise's hackneyed screenplay.

Along the lines of Top Gun, Cruise stars in a thoroughly entertaining film about a unique world, only this time its stock car racing.

This rates about as high as I could ever place a movie about NASCAR racing, it's not very high of a rating, but it's still an achievement. Also, Kidman was pretty terrible here, but that might be the ridiculously tight curls and shoulder pads she was wearing paired with an unbearable Australian accent.

The star, producers, and director of _Top Gun_ reunite for this similarly vacuous (if less blatantly fascistic) package. Towne was clearly just picking up an easy paycheck.

Cole Trickle is one of the worst names for a main character this side of Guy Letharge. Cruise and Kidman should have just saved everyone's time and made a sex tape.

It lacks the punchline, the whole plot feels like a set-up part, and then it ends. Early Hans Zimmer score is a blast. On-screen chemistry between Cruise and Kidman is definitely here. Overall, a cheesy, unexciting sports flick, that is very easy to watch and even easier to forget.

Just terrible in so many ways but still sort of enjoyable. Just so cheesy, and none of the bad guys end up being bad guys, and the Cruise/Kidman relationship is a weird hybrid of Top Gun and Roadhouse's romances.

Days of Thunder, the latest Tom Cruise movie, which is a flimsy but nonetheless compelling story of a hot-shot amateur race car driver who wants to make it in the big-time world of championship stock car racing. Good writing by Robert Towne and a host of strong supporting performances complement the on-the-track visuals of director Tony Scott in giving us a sense of the leap of faith that is required by drivers at this level.

as 80's as it gets, days of thunder rehashes the barebones formula of the decade, puts in on a race track and watches it circle around. it's somewhat nostalgic, and some race footage is cool, but in the end, it's a very forgettable experience.

Flashy, noisy car-race saga by the filmmakers and star of _Top Gun_. Viewer can a) savor crew chief Duvall's fine performance, b) revel in neurosurgeon/love interest Kidman's disdain for racing, c) sit back and soak up Cruise's charisma, or d) count the cliches. Gives new meaning to the term Formula One.

This mediocre Tony Scott outing tries to be about the mortal toll taken by stock car racing and similar competitive adrenaline rushes, but the script and its general execution is too---forgive the pun---pedestrian. But there is a nostalgic filling beneath the shallow crust of late '80s, early '90s Paramount and Bruckheimer genre stuff.

Days Of Thunder is one of my guiltiest pleasures. Yes it's corny mush, but after umpteen viewings I still enjoy it. Visually it's nothing spectacular by Tony Scott's standards but there are elements of excitement with the Hans Zimmer score packing a punch. Tom Cruise isn't his most charismatic and the same can definitely be said for the very bland Nicole Kidman. But there is chemistry there. Robert Duvall is a strong addition. It's a poor mans Top Gun, but there's certainly fun to be had.

Top Gun on wheels minus the 'homoeroticism'. There is plenty of moronic macho bluster, but it doesn't produce any real laughs. Top Gun at least has the benefit of being a nostalgia piece that can be enjoyed ironically, from a safe distance. Towne's script is a generic mishmash of anemically drawn characters and completely predictable plotting, and the romance between Kidman and Cruise is surprisingly stale. Scott handles the racing sequences like a pro, but it's one of his weaker films.

men hurtling through their lives with no knowledge of their own wiring, corporate interests tattooing their flesh and propelling them in a chosen direction. "control is an illusion" but illusions are the closest we'll get to self-actualisation, if we survive that long without death or brain damage. scott's unhinged kineticism makes the racing breathless, thrilling, disturbing--a resonant contradiction in this era of the newcastle takeover and novelty fights between bankrupt punch-drunk legends.

Tony Scott’s style and the charisma/gravitas of the cast (particularly Cruise and Rooker’s rivalry turned friendship) do the heavy lifting for a mediocre screenplay about the deeply boring subject of stock car racing.

There are probably a lot of hardcore NASCAR fans who consider Days of Thunder their favorite movie of all time. I am not a NASCAR fan and this spiritual successor to Top Gun is just a milieu of bad tropes and corny acting. At least Top Gun had volleyball to compensate.
