Love this classic Tom Cruise formula movie. Basically Top Gun NASCAR edition. Yes, we know how edgy you are for pointing out NASCAR is boring. That's why I watch movies about stock car racing instead of watching actual NASCAR. Fav scene: that turn 4 and the reveal.

Despite whatever their real life relationship was, Cruise and Kidman have zero chemistry on screen. Plus, auto racing is fucking lame.

Vroom, vroom vroom. Before Cruise jumped the shark and Oprah's couch he did this flick. Some of the supposedly serious scenes did turn out to be unintentionally funny like when Cruise threatens his friend/opponent with a pool cue to go back to the doctors. The driving scenes weren't that bad. Maybe if I knew something about driving I could find faults with it, but I got to see a little of what goes on between the pit and driver. Closest I will ever come to actually watching Nascar.

Like Top Gun but without planes.

I hate car racing movies and this did nothing to improve my opinion. The only part I liked was when they were racing in their wheelchairs. High, and probably wholly unitentional, comedy.

For a gun-tootin', high strung society as the Americas, they sure have amazingly dull sports, and none more so than the roundabout racing that is NASCAR. All of Scott's visual trickery cannot change this fact, and the formulaic script isn't even trying. Complaints aside my guilty admission is, that it has leapfrogged from being cool when I was a kid to a nostalgic childhood memory, skipping the phase where the banality of the whole thing makes you want to write the 80s out of the history books.

Blatant knock-off of Scott/Cruise's own TOP GUN can't even reach GUN's modest peaks; with surprisingly little substance to the conflicts and character relationships, this ambles along in second gear, before revving up for an admittedly exciting (if truncated) finale. Cruise and Kidman share little to no chemistry together (and this may go down as Kidman's worst, most wooden performance); bless Duvall for being able to pull a few genuine moments from Towne (!!) and Cruise's hackneyed screenplay.

Almost every Tom Cruise movie from 1985-1992 has an IDENTICAL plot: Brash young man with uncommon talent (insert cool profession here) is mentored by an older and wiser version of himself, while romancing a woman out of his league. I recommend viewing in this descending order of watchabilty: Born on the Fourth of July (soldier), Top Gun (fighter pilot), The Color of Money (pool hustler), Far and Away (settler), Days of Thunder (race car driver), Legend (warrior), Cocktail (bartender)...
