It's like not funny Roy Andersson or not deeply-human Kaurismäki. It's just silly all along. There's no social critique in creating extreme absurd characters and making fun of them. And even the pedestrian direction does not save anything.

Absurdity as social commentary that works well enough, though not without flaws. It's rarely laugh out loud funny, but it is consistently amusing and that dark comedy is tied to some nice jabs at suburban conventions. Like the comedy, though, those jabs are never particularly strong and some aspects feel like overreaching. Still worth watching if you're in the mood for a deadpan suburban dark comedy.

Not quite as great as Abel, but still really good. What i said about Seidl and Solondz before goes doubly for this, as structurally its not unlike a much more heightened, deadpan absurdist Dog Days or a toned-down, less acerbic Happiness. Van Warmerdam may take sort of a cartoonish approach to characters, but doesn't seem misanthropic. It's worth noting that this film came before the whole "ironic dysfunctional suburbia ensemble film" became such a cliche.

Funny. There's so much pent up sexual frustration and these characters make for some fascinating psychological portraits. The ending could have provided a bit more resolution, especially considering the wasted comic potential, but it was still very enjoyable.
