This is good, although considering van Warmerdam's early films had such a distinct sensibility i'm not quite sure it's a step in the right direction, since it kind of feels like (slightly) defanged Dogtooth...

The opening 20 minutes work very well as an absurdist short film. Once the roles of this dysfunctional family have been made clear, we wait for some worthwhile Act 2 plot point to appear, but it never does. It gets less interesting the longer the same gag goes on, with a weak attempt to tie everything up towards the end. The setting is nice and the characters have potential to be interesting. There's still a place for absurdist cinema but van Warmerdam probably should have left this as a short.
