Dým bramborové nate

Vlacil's style here is somewhat comparable to a muted Bergman. His later (unfortunate) tendency towards dedramatisation was already apparent, and the main character's relationship with a troubled young woman just skirts on the right side of convention, but it's generally effective thanks to Hruskinky's wonderfully understated performance as a middle aged doctor returning 'home', only to find nothing but emptiness and vague hostility, and Vlacil's control over the elements.
