Dead Pigs

Expected more but liked it. It isn't as memorable as the premise/title lead me to believe it would be. There are moments of playfulness (such as the end with the karaoke style subtitles) and some great scenes/shots. Yan is a competent director, for sure, and it's acted well... but it took way too long to get invested in these characters and to start putting these pieces together. Even once they came together it didn't feel as earned as it should have.

It has its moments but not as impressive as a whole.

A series of related characters get pulled into a grand scheme about being stuck in life. The international cast gives the movie a nice Hollywood touch. Beautiful to look at and ranges from thoughtful to sad to laugh out loud funny.

so go-for-broke audacious for a debut feature that I can't NOT admire it. I'm all in on Cathy Yan. just on a visual level, to saturate something so absurd, and yet, so empathetic, is drastically refreshing.

A fun panorama of modern china told in a series of intersecting stories.
