This movie tries to do a little bit too much. There are several good parts and scenes in this film. The cast also does a good job here. Overall I would recommend this film.

Entirely too formulaic. An interesting perspective, sure, but you have to do something with it.

While I don't remember too much about this I remember really enjoying it. It's due for a rewatch.

It's all loud and edgy but doesn't have any substance to the deaths and violence. The Vietnam scene where Imperioli has his dick and balls cut off and stuffed in his mouth comes off like a scene from Tropic Thunder. Same with the main character and the heist, I just didn't really care what happened. Keith David as usual gives a really good performance though.

There's two and half movies jammed one bold two hour film. The filmmaking pays homage to Scorsese (of whom the Brothers Hughes are big fans of) and Larenz Tate, Bokeem Woodbine and the ever reliable Keith David deliver great performances. The only downside is that sometimes the sequences don't transition smoothly from one register to another. This still is Big, Bold and Black filmmaking at it's finest in the nineties- with an impeccable soundtrack.

Solid crime drama which spends the time to invest in backstory and establish three-dimensional characters before taking its departure from realism into pure fiction. Good ensemble cast and good pacing.

Borrows heavily from other films (e.g. Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now) and attempts to inject social commentary into pulpy material. Stylistically, it's a bold and confident effort that showcases the Hughes Brothers' technical skill. Their writing skills, however, are notably less developed, and it suffers from trying to tackle too many issues simultaneously (race, class, the Vietnam war etc), resulting in a lack of clarity and focus, but there are some fine performances and powerful moments.
