Contains the dumbest twist in movie history. Or should I say 'dummy-est twist'? Haha! Am I right?

Sigh. Why does the horror genre attract the laziest, dimmest, most juvenile people in the business? Give us adults, please! Talented adults writing horror!

While this film has the grainy and bleak visual flair of the early Wan & Whannell days, it doesn’t quite fully get there as an overall film. For what’s it’s worth, Dead Silence has some really creepy cinematography that lends itself well to horror elements. However, it’s story feels rushed in a really abrupt way. The twist doesn’t fully connect, being that that there isn’t enough established to engage with our antagonist. Ultimately, I like this in a weird way, but not perfect.

Really unbalanced with lots of lazy writing some of the characters were serious (and boring) others were camp and it did not mesh well. Which is a shame because there was so much aesthetically good about this, the puppets had a good design, fantastic cinematography and color use without going overboard with it. Sound and silence also used effectively. It might be worth a view to someone who is really into atmosphere in moves though is more eerie than scary.

A boy lives with his mortician father and sneaks into a room he shouldn't be in to find the dead body of a notorious old lady (scary). He approaches the coffin to take a closer look and ends up knocking it over, dropping the corpse right on top of himself (terrifying). He scrambles away and in a flash of lightening sees that the body has disappeared. It reappears, standing over him (pants pee). A single scene of this caliber will gain forgiveness for anything. And so, I like this movie.

Too much information. Wan's most expositive and story-driven film somehow works despite the efforts of the lousy cast and the lazy script -- the fact that in the last 15 minutes we see a clown dummy and find out that Ashen's dad was a doll all the time just make it seem really dumb. But it's still possible to have a good time if we stay with the tricks -- hints of body horror invoving Mary Shaw turning herself into a doll and cutting tongues off to build an army of dolls (how it ends).

Wan's obsession with shop worn horror tropes like creepy dolls, spooky old women and lanterns in darkness/fog began here, in this highly uneven throwback. The balance between theft and ingenuity is curiously off, and the eccentric touches don't work nearly as well as they did in Insidious. There are some unsettling moments, especially involving Heney as Shaw, and the much maligned twist is pure grand guignol, but the connective tissue is weak due to mediocre writing and middling performances.

It may be a generic mash-up of any number of “light” 00s horrors, but benefits from backing off from torture porn elements, and Wan’s stylish eye behind the camera, creating an eerie, unsettling mood (and a few jumps for the wimpier audience members!) Ably and effectively performed by its cast, with Kwanten’s somewhat bland earnestness a nice foil for the ghoulishness; I’ll even go into bat for Wahlberg, whose eccentric, hirsute (!) detective feels like he fell out of a 40s horror flick!

There were some interesting points to this movie. The introduction and some of the transitional work with the silent film-esque usage was actually quite creative and fitting for a ghost-town carnivale-like town. The plot and acting, however, are so ridiculous that it's hard to really do much but laugh the whole way through. It's obvious this is from the creators of Saw due to the funny way everything is revealed in such an "oh my God," shocking fashion, but ultimately with what is actuall

So much potential with the excellent doll design and the moments of silence. I especially liked the moment where the lightning flashed but no sound was made at all. However, the plot was horrific and the acting (except for Donnie Wahlberg's incredible scene chewing) was just bland. The twist made me want to punch something because of how retarded it was.

Now this is what a horror movie should be like! It made me jump several times... had a suprisingly good ending (hate movies i can guess the ending) Acting was pretty good.. The story was a bit corny but they really made the most out of it. Way better than simular movies like candyman, boogeyman, darkness falls etc etc

Well I personally think puppets are creepy, so some of the stuff going down in this movie freaked me out. And everybody says the twist at the end was predictable, I didn't figure it out, I actually thought it was cool. But all in all, not that great of a movie.

Really plays off on the fear of dolls thing that has been done many times before. Doesn't really offer anything new, but it does combine the right elements to make it better than average. I'm a big sucker for supernatural horror on top of that, so I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

The tagline of this lazy horror film excuse urges us not to scream. Well, there aren't a whole lotta reasons to scream in a somewhat intriguing but utterly inept thriller that, despite it being competently made, comes apart due to a dire lack of chills. Jamie Ashen must be one of the most idiotic and uninteresting protagonists ever -and Kwanten, sorta charming in "True Blood", is so absolutely bland in the role, that he gives us simply one more reason not to care. "Dead Silence" is dead indeed.

James Wan seems to make movies that petrify mainstream audiences, which is probably why the horror and underground community don't really take him seriously. Heard this was one of the scariest movies of the last decade, which of course it isn't. There are a couple of creepy moments but the entire thing is just the usual b-movie schlock. The twist, nonsensical and retarded as it is, is kind of fun. Better than Insidious but worse than Saw.

There were a number of ways this could have been better. There's the potential for a good movie in there somewhere, but this crew missed the mark. There were a lot of common horror tropes that could have been easily avoided, along with a way too early reveal. The potential for a Sixth Sense level of twist could have been built with a few minor changes, but sadly, the screenwriter(s) and/or director and/or anyone else involved never caught on.

So what I was really hoping from Dead Silence was a more average James Wan flick; maybe something like the first two Insidious movies, but nope. Dead Silence is a snoozer. For a horror movie, it's not frightening at all, and not only does it feel overly rushed, but also overly simplified. Considering Insidious and The Conjuring it's hard to believe James Wan was even involved. I'd skip it unless you're marathonning for The Conjuring 2.

Goofy dialogue and a generic set-up can't prevent a movie that's basically James Wan crafting high-octane scares and building his colorful signature style from the ground up from being supremely watchable. Like Saw, there's very little heart in the movie's premise, but unlike that career-maker, Dead Silence is all neon lights, fog machines, and moving shadows in the best way possible.

James Wan's shows off his keen directorial eye to be sure. Unfortunately it is a little wasted on a cranked out script by Leigh Whannel. The scares are few and far between and the performers are average at best. It really all comes down to Wan's visual direction.

This one did not work for me. Ventriloquist's dummies have been scary in the past. There are two Twilight Zone episodes and the movie, Magic, that utilized them perfectly. I wouldn't bother with this one.
