The best Dan O'Bannon movie Dan O'Bannon never made even though the credits list Dan O'Bannon. I liked this the way I like a good Tales From the Crypt or Creepshow vignette. There aren't a lot of surprises but the ride is so fun! The cop seems genuinely bewildered and his wife is exactly the right amount of gaslighting incredulous. Watched as part of a 15 movie 24 hour marathon I hosted celebrating Robert Englund because everything I do is awesome and also I have friends that are crazy.

I hope whoever did the poster was paid well because that's probably why most of us saw this.

Charlie Bucket's Grandpa Joe gets involved in some unusual shenanigans in this strange but reasonably well made horror. So does Flash Gordon's lass. And there's Freddy! It is atmospheric in parts, and the style and setting suit the curious story. I think the trailer made it look more horrific than it actually is, though, and it ends up feeling like a decent Twilight Zone episode; its level of hokeyness perhaps prevents it from being elevated to classic status. Worth seeing for 80s horror fans.

The tone is a little strange (it goes from creepy and brutal to downright hokey at times) but it has an intriguing premise, some creepy moments, and a neat ending.

I don't know why this movie doesn't get more love. It plays out like a good Richard Matheson story. Sure, it's not the best film ever, but it doesn't deserve to be ignored the way it is.

Really peculiar horror film that unfolds at a deliberate pace, but has one whopper of an ending. Has an appearance by Robert England B.F. (Before Freddy).

It's a slow burn for sure, but there were certain sensibilities that kept my interest so I didn't feel as if I needed to keep checking my watch. The final act though is terrific. Probably one of the best climaxes on film. I felt it could have been pushed a little further, but realistically just a nudge.

Slow burning horror that takes advantage of its sleepy coastal location to build tension and generate scares. It was great to see a fresh take on zombies. Jack Albertson was excellent playing against type as the "mad scientist".

An unusual mix of zombies, small-town secrecy and gory murder that unfortunately doesn't always work. That doesn't mean the film is a waste of time: it has a creepy atmosphere, some great (and a few silly) effects, and a very effective ending.

Low-grade shocker. Some of the nightmarish scenes at the end are moderately effective. O'Bannon apparently stated that he did not in fact contribute to the script, and that he agreed to accept the screenwriting credit as a favour to help get the film made. Well it worked, and in addition eventually caused me to rent it from the video store, after thirty years of admiring the cover (VHS then DVD), a cover with absolutely no relation to the film, hence borrowed on pretences that were doubly false.

I don't want to spoil anything about this one, but it's an imaginative slasher where a small town cop's trying to figure out a bunch of grisly mob murders. The special effects aren't that great, but this one has a nice Twilight Zone twist and also Robert Englund. Quite good.

very in debt to Twilight Zone mode of storytelling but it's effective at it. the reveal surprised me, mostly cuz i didn't think they would steal M. Night Shyamalan's idea 18 years previously.

I don't get it. The premise is neat & the opening scene is pretty great, but everything after that is just plain & kinda boring. The performances are mostly pretty understated, which is fine, but it doesn't make for a very thrilling experience. The final twist is super predictable, so much so that it felt too easy, & the logic of what's going on- especially the final twist- makes zero sense. None. At all. It's definitely not bad & has some effective moments, but overall it was pretty meh for me.

If you liked this watch Messiah of Evil, similar vibes but IMO MoE is superior. Great opening and final scenes but most of the middle is clunky.

cant say i was scared at any point, and it was to slow moving to make the most of what could have been a great story. the idea had some serious potential, but was bogged down by slow plot and overacting on the protagonists part. at least it had some serious atmosphere that counts for something.

Atmospheric and gruesome horror film with a very rememberable ending. Pacing is off, and acting is really over the top. After all, it is just a b-movie. But good at being it.

O'Bannon's fascination with embalming and zombies is expressed much darker here than in Return of the Living Dead. An unsettling and unique piece of horror.

Hammy ham, ham ham, ham ham - The leads acting. The plot pieces fall into place in a predictable nature, which is excusable as there are jolts for tempo dynamic, floating around in the set-up. Perhaps if I hadn't watched another film from that era recently, I would have been more taken by the final shot.

This isn't a great horror film, but at least it is done well. It isn't a slasher film relying on gore or some other stupid rote horror film. It actually builds up some tension even if it becomes pretty predictable. Also it is notable for being Albertson's last performance. I got more than I expected out of it however.

A great little horror film filled such oddity and great practical effects. With a town that has a creeping dread reminiscent of something like The Wicker Man, Dead and Buried thrives in the collective bizarreness of its setting.

A delightful mashup of The Wicker Man, Rosemary's Baby and Reanimator (4 years before Reanimator no less!). Like a love letter to Lovecraft, this gruesome little flick revels in its amoral weirdness. Released before the cliches stultified B-horror this was a refreshing addition to the genre.

Box Versátil Zumbis no Cinema Volume 4.

The element of mystery brings a lot to this film. Small towns can bring such a warm and welcoming vibe to movies. In horror movies like this, the way that small town vibe is transformed into something so eerie and uncomfortable can leave you feeling unsettled.

So many cruel, perverse, striking or just beautifully put together images of unconventional, edgy horror. Dan burying his wife and realizing he might be this small city's last living man, Dobbs putting on some lipstick while about to finally die. Such an underrated 80s gem.

The film has a great hook, an interesting twist, a really good performance from Albertson (in his final role) and (mostly) stunning effects from Stan Winston. It feels a little curmudgeonly to demand that it also make sense.
