Rather random and aimless. Score would be lower were it not for the scene where a Japanese midget is shot in the head by 3 assassins, switching to a wire-frame model showing the perfect 60 degree angles the bullets travel through his brain.

Knowing the writer's past Miike works might make it more understandable to what you're getting yourself into (a bit of Young Thugs: Nostalgia, mostly The Bird People In China). It has barely anything to do with the manic vibe and creativity of its former entry.

Even psychotic assassins need friends. Takashi Miike is very likely insane if this flick represents even a fragment of his psyche. Weird and violent.

Rewatch 22-09-'22: Tough one to rate, but upping it from 71 to 75. Miike's got some of the grossest, most unacceptably stupid sensibilities in the game, and those do drag Birds down a bit, but the core of the film has a ton of heart. First half is like an almost-superior-were-it-not-for-Miike-having-a-broken-brain Sonatine. Easy to appreciate what the last third is going for, but hard to look past how rushed and no-budgetly it's carried out.

I had no clue what's going on, but visally it's great.

One of those ineffable movie experiences that are so subjectively compelling and entertaining that it seems kind of absurd and pointless to put into words what I enjoyed about it. I really dig Miike's '90s anti-Yakuza films.

Miike does Sonatine. Don't feel like you have to have seen the first one to watch this, they aren't connected at all.

This movie is great genre play. It has all the elements that make it worth seeing with an excellent story of two brothers and their relationship after accidentally finding each other. Visually and musically pleasing, sometimes too slow.

One of Miike's best. It's sentimental and emotionally gripping while being weird and surreal and awfully violent.

This movie is about 2 bros being bros, and it has the best bro ending I've ever seen.

Probably the most interesting one of these movies. The scene with the gang war and the strange children's play was very well done.
