I'm not into guns so I found it hard to identify with the main characters in this movie. The acting was fine but the story did not interest me. Take a pass on this movie

Funny in its own way. Over the top but that's the whole point.

Starts out pretty interesting, but almost exactly an hour into it, everything slowly gets more and more ridiculous. The thing is there's no real exposition or explanation as to why things are happening the way they are, it's extremely aggravating and the only word I can use to describe it as a whole is "stupid."

Directing was decent but the story was one of the worst by Lars von Trier. Symbolic movie's got not much layers in it. Alison Pill was nice though.

It has a fascinating idea and flashes of quality - directed by Thomas Vinterberg and written by Lars von Trier - but this is an utter mess, one which dangerously steps near pretentiousness and weirdness for the sake of it and more than likely enters them during the narrative multiple times. Its take on gun culture (specifically American) eventually leads to little after having to sit through overused narration and pointless eccentricities.

Bears the authorial stamp of von Trier while lacking the directorial flair. Von Trier has across a number of movies explored the deep ambivalence he seems to feel about the notion of pursuing idealistic projects. In this case, the closest resemblance is perhaps to THE IDIOTS, imagining a gang or cult that arises as a response to dissatisfaction if not disgust with contemporary society. But this parable also seems to me to draw, in a heavily abstracted way, from the tale of Vernon Howell.

I'm still not convinced about Vinterberg's directing skills, but the story works and there's some decent acting. The change of style for the third act is well executed, although I think it was a bad decision.

The story sucks, the acting was acceptable, but still Mr.Vinterberg.

Did they even bother to think this film through or did they just randomly piece it together from critically acclaimed film amusing that would automatically get them an Oscar Nominee? This film was clearly premature (under conceived). I quit 5 minutes in, which didn't feel premature to me.

The entire premise is silly, stupid, and unrealistic, and it gets even more so until the film's climax is a Giant Crescendo of Stupid. Even so, it was surprisingly well-acted and the stylistic directing was charming. The costume designs were interesting even if they were distractingly incongruous with the setting (and not in the good way the filmmakers intended). It'd make an intriguing video game if doing so wouldn't completely fuck up its own point.

Lars von Trier wrote, (but did not direct) this fascinating story about a young man who forms a pacifist gun club in a West Virginia town. Thomas Vinterberg's straightforward direction complements the typically excellent script well; the actors are excellent, one and all, while the set (all filmed on a Danish soundstage) is astoundingly real. The story touches on themes of gun-worship and camraderie in a way that should find support on both sides of the issue. Critically drubbed, God knows why.

This film was written by Lars von Trier and while it sometimes has a feeling of his work to it, this is not a von Trier film. That's not to say it's bad at all - I quite liked it. I think it would've been even better if he'd directed it too though. It (quite effectively) romanticises guns a lot early on, but essentially condemns them in the end. Overall, I thought it was a pretty cool film with some appealing young actors, a great soundtrack and interesting themes.

Von Trier's script here is a wonderful take on the issues of youth subculture and the danger and idealism that goes into it. The cast all around are absolutely fantastic, and Zentropa's use of resources here is fantastic in making one convinced that this backlot was the back woods of West Virginia. A powerfully moving film that is sadly lacking the cult that it so rightfully deserves.

Surprisingly compelling and well-paced, despite the really silly concept and weird dichotomy of low stakes and high action (I wasn't surprised to learn at the end that von Trier wrote it). It kinda goes off the deep end in the third act, but it remains somehow strangely entertaining for most of its length. Also Alison Pill's boobs. Unexpected but very appreciated.
