"It's a hand grenade". Oh yes! As soon as that wonderful line was uttered I knew this movie had won me over! David Carradine, dressed as a large black dildo, in an outfit I can only assume he pulled from his own wardrobe, kills scores of innocents in his pursuit of the American Dream. Stallone and Carradine were always at the forefront of socially relevant biting satire like this movie.... or maybe not! Great fun.

David Carradine and Sly Stallone lead the awesome cast of this Roger Corman flick about a futuristic cross country car race where points are scored for killing bystanders. It's a cornball mix of The Running Man, Days of Thunder and pro wrestling. Besides the hilariously tame car stunts, there's lots of tits and stupid jokes and novelty violence...plus Carradine slow dancing in tiny briefs and a gimp mask.

While this film's satire should have been sharper and more focused, its still utterly hilarious. The movie is quite entertaining, and its interesting how "Death Race" and other sci-fi films like it have often portrayed the future as a dark, fascist anti-utopia. Which is also notable considering a "super strong man," an element of fascism, is the film's man character. I really wish Roger Corman would have directed this picture, if only because I feel he would have added something more here.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #40: Unapologetically cheesy with hilarious one-liners, gratitous violence and a dash of dystopian satire to boot make this a B movie for the ages. VeTurbo's "I think you're one very large baked potato," is definately the highlight of Stallone's career.

Campy B-movie fun with a concept so insane it's hard not to love it. It's not in any way a good film, the writing is horrible and it's quite poorly made in every aspect. Carradine is forgettable, but Stallone is hilarious as a pissed off Machine-Gun Joe. Could've been much better, but seeing as it clocks in at a quite short 79 minutes I'd recommend this to anyone interested in Stallone/campy B-movies or anyone who finds the idea of hit-and-runs being a national sport amusing.

This feels very culty. At the start, I wasn't particularly engaged with this, but as the lunacy unfolded I got increasingly into it. It isn't particularly well made, but hits enough of its targets to make it interesting. It's either hugely daft, or very clever. I can't quite figure out which. Either way, it's pretty good fun, and worth a look.

Carsploitation isn't my favorite genre, but when it is as insane as Death Race 2000 I can't help but be entertained. The bright colors and incessant energy highlight a mixture of hilarious characters and casual violence. What Carradine is winding under that glove is comic gold.

Stallone hits his stride as he shouts, punches/chokes women, murders plenty of people, and completely steals the movie from David Carradine in this over-the-top classic. Too bad to love, but too much of a pleasure to ignore.

Hooray America! Fuck the French! Violence! Campy, incompetent, and poorly made, but way too much fun and too self-parodying to hate, especially if you have a thing for sci-fi B-movies.

A fun movie to watch, but really unrealistic. I like how they didn't even try to make it look like a future, it's just the 70s with the an ultra violent sport. Stallone was overracting, while David Carradine was underacting, but it kind of works. Quite a few twists, most of which are fucking retarded. The ending is the best where he runs over the annoying announcer guy, even though he just proclaimed that he was abolishing the sport.

There's some obvious social commentary going on here, and i'm pretty sure this was a huge inspiration for running man (the movie, not the book), but other than drooling over some 70s babes and their boobs i wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Seeing david carradine dressed up as the gimp has a certain irony.

How awesome is Death Race 2000? Violence, satire, 70's psychedelia, Carradine, Stallone, many, many, breasts, President Frankenstein, and muscle cars. I'm giving it 89%, and if you don't like it, you can shove your Ozu up your Cahiers du Cinema.

I kind of hate myself for liking this, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that it wasn't a hell of a lot of fun to watch. The highlight for me is Don Steele, who somehow manages to be the campiest thing in an already gloriously campy film. If you can enjoy a movie that is too ridiculous for words, and is aware of its own absurdity - check this one out.

Don't take it seriously, watch it with the guys over beer and wings, and the movie certainly entertains. And then you can spend every road trip you ever take making obscure references to it. And for that reason, I'd score it higher than I'm sure most people will.

Absolutely brilliant! The inspiration for the ultra-violent computergame Carmageddon, this movie was intended to steal some of Rollerball's thunder (compare Deep Impact and Armageddon, or Antz and A Bug's Life). And while Rollerball tried to be a serious distopian sci-fi movie, this one went completely over-the-top. Memorable b-movie in every way.

Like a demented episode of Wacky Races, Death Race 2000 revels in its excess of senseless violence to the point where it all becomes rather funny. Entertaining throughout, with good pacing and cool cars and costumes, it offers memorable turns from Carradine and Stallone as rival racers and Don Steele as the overzealous commentator. The ending is so ridiculous that it's difficult not to just laugh.

The tug of war between Carradine and Stallone isn't that compelling, and some of the gags aren't shocking or funny enough. But it's great at those basest of movie pleasures, and the script adds mileage to the senseless ultraviolence with its satirical points.

Enjoyable fuel-injected exploitation romp that has a charmingly pulpy style & insane satirical tone. It's concise enough not to overstay its welcome, just when you start thinking "this is getting way too stupid and adolescent" it comes up with something freshly crazy that grabs your attention. It's pretty fun and does the job but nothing to write home about.

The movie has personality but it just didn't have enough goofball one-liners and spectacle to be particularly fun. The gore scenes are edited in a really awkward way, as if the director didn't want anyone to see them but they still put in the effort to produce it anyway? Given the insane premise, I would think they'd go more ham on crazy chase sequences and vehicular manslaughter but most of the time it's just running over a dude in the most limp fashion imaginable.

I am not a grindhouse/trash movie fan in general, and I came into it understanding that this is arguably the popular peak of grindhouse cinema. And predictably, I was underwhelmed. The movie plops the viewer down into the action quite nicely, and some of the deaths are cool. But, after I got past the silly point scoring setup, the overall experience simply didn't surprise me. I just don't see the point of most grindhouse affairs, and this is no different.
