100% agree with Criticker user anerigo's review: (quoted:) [Sure it may seem like a rip-off of Taxi Driver at times, but it captures the essence of a dark action movie. It's great mindless fun that's never too emotionally involving nor ever so absurd that it becomes an exercise in parody. Bacon manages to express the extremes of his character adeptly, while the rest of the cast is mediocre enough to seem passably convincing. It's all about the gratuitous violence--nothing more, nothing less.]

James Wan obviously desires to be the next Scorsese - the ending is a clear imitation of Taxi Driver. The film is, however, flawed in too many ways: even though the last few scenes are quite beautiful, the story itself is a bit on the funny side. Kevin Bacon is good. I mean, he's real good - no one can dodge bullets like him! The action is kind of cartoony and the violence over the top, and that's the way I like it. Plus nice cinematography, especially the long parking hall scene.

bad bad bad, the shotgun blowing perfect circles in the mini-blinds is pure comic gold. I think it must have been hard for anyone with any experience to work with these filmmakers. I can imagine a prop guy feebly raising an objection pointing to common sense, and getting a cappuccino thrown in his face, "I don't care if aspirin is a blood thinner, he needs to down half a bottle to get pumped," ... "more clicking noises from these guns please"

Extremely dark and depressing, with some very original and visceral combat. Definitely not a light movie, but rewarding nonetheless.

Certain elements here do work and several don't. Kevin Bacon delivers, but everything outside his character sort of flounders and lessens what should've been some hard-hitting impact. It's plenty bloody though thanks to 'Saw' director James Wan.

I love the concept of a revenge movie that shows nothing but consequence, but the film doesn't delivers in setting the right tone. Beacon and Goodman are amazing here, but Wan is a very lacking director. One minute he is trying to pull a Paul T. Anderson (the parking lot scene) and then the next scene he has the sappiest song ever playing during the sappiest scene ever--it's frustratingly bad. The action and violence is great, but feels like gun porn without the right context. A miss.

There was some kind of okay action here and there, but all in all the script was trash. Story was plain dull. For effects, director has deffinately seen Taxi Driver and was trying to top it. I'm talking about only the very end of that classic... John Goodman was doing his best, but his part was badly written as well.

I was hoping Kevin Bacon would be way more bad ass, I was sadly let down. For those people who like realism he acts exactly how you would imagine a "mild-mannered executive" would on a killing spree, but personally I wanted him to be more like The Punisher.

Stylistically the film is a complete 180 for "Saw" director James Wan, but its conviction that carries the film home. And let's face it you can't have a "Death Sentence" without conviction.

I honestly don't get all the awful reviews for this movie, I quite dug it and found myself really engaged in Bacon's quest for vengeance. Yes the movie did have it's fair share of cheesy dialouge and a few silly plot holes, but it was still a really enjoyable supsense thriller nonetheless. It's also worth noting that even though John Goodman was only onscreen for about 10 minutes collectively, he still manages to blow everyone away with sheer awesome acting abillity.

While it may be closer to the Death Wish sequels than the original in terms of quality and respectability, Death Sentence accomplishes it's goals. Assuming it's goal was to be a gritty, pulpy B-movie revenge thriller. This is a rare Kevin Bacon role and it's fun to see him in a film so unrelentingly brutal.

Bacon is no Seagal. Its like Death Wish had sex with Renegade Justice and out popped Death Sentence 9 months later. I was hoping for more corniness when Bacon would kill someone, but alas, this is a "serious" film. Lets hope this doesnt become the trend for action films - its no Die Hard (so i cant imagine "Death Sentence on a boat" being used to describe any movies soon). Kelly Preston is still hot tho.

This wasn't nearly as bad as I thought as I thought it would be. I wouldn't say it's great but I really enjoyed it. Bacon is solid and the film knows how to be sad, violent, and unsettling. Worth watching once. Wan is a good director if he knows what he's doing.

I was surprised by Death Sentence; it's really not as bad as you'd probably expect it to be. Gritty action and a well-paced plot make it at least entertaining throughout. Though no part of it is particularly good, there's nothing bad about it either. Death Sentence has its moments of cheese and hilarity due to overacting and some strange directorial decisions, but overall, it's an interesting movie that is easy to get into.

Alot more emotion and intelligence than I was expecting. The film is about the arbitrary lines we draw in our morality, and the first half especially focuses on the effect of violence on a family. While not a masterpiece, this film was about 10 times as good as I was expecting. The Parking Garage chase scene alone was worth the watch.

Thanks to the great Kevin Bacon, this is entertaining at times. But there are scenes and dialogue so bad I found them an insult to intelligence, especially from the cop on Bacon's case. The way she treats him in the hospital after a certain horrible event is awful. The filmmakers should be embarrassed that they let some of this stuff pass through. It's sad because this was well filmed and could have been good, but they really fucked it up.

I've got a thing for the kind of revenge stories or stories in general where one thing escalates into another and the ball gets rolling from there, every decision causing even bigger harm and destruction upon its wake. Kevin Bacon and John Goodman are both very awesome in this and talking about guns, the sound design for them is pretty damn nice here. This might not be everyone's jam, but if you want a bloody, simple revenge story, this one was okay.

Now this was more my kind of flick, reminiscent of the Cannon Films era with Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson as the vigilantes with no remorse and a fuckload of firepower to scratch their itch. Here Kevin Bacon steps into the role of nice guy turned badass in this revenge tale that was simple and somewhat entertaining with some very cool camera shots. Don't expect top notch story or well written characters but if it's a mindless don't give a damn action film you're looking for, give this one a

Like everyone else has said, Kevin Bacon is as expected and everyone else is terrible. I enjoy John Goodman in most things, but his character has almost no depth here (and that's a running theme, none of them do). Everything is black and white, and Garrett Hedlund is very annoying as the super evil gang leader. If you're looking for mindless gritty BS (lord knows I am every now and then), this will subdue you for a little while. Even with that criteria you can do much better than this.

It poses as this grim, stylish take on the novel that Death Wish was based on, but it's just not very good, is it? Pretty basic -- and kinda cheesy, naive and not in a good way -- revenge thriller from start to finish, with the exception of some visual flair here and there -- the tracking shots at the parking lot scene -- and, well, John Goodman just delivering everything. Wan would improve so much in the following years.

Top badass moment? It's always the quiet ones. If Travis Bickle had sex with The Terminator (the technical details of that aren't important right now) Nick Hume would be their offspring. As a vegan, I hate to admit that I really enjoy a good portion of Bacon and this plateful doesn't disappoint. The story's simple and the plot colander-like, but this is a great revenge movie, which takes just enough time to allow us to care for him before he really lets rip. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
