You know this movie is going to be a classic when, right after the opening credits finish, we get Van Damme's first line: 'he killed my partner!' But wait! There's a slow-mo jump-kick into a furnace, a one-eyed Benson, and a fight where JCVD takes out all his enemies using nothing but roundhouses. You all know the saying--roundhouse you once, shame on me; roundhouse you twice, shame on you; roundhouse you thrice, shame on God for creating a reality in which you get roundhoused 3 times in a row.

This movie merits an 80 score on this quote alone. "This is LA, not Canada. We have procedures here!"

Even if I didn't hate prison movies, this would still suck.

Burke I've had it with your splits first ask questions later attitude! The mayor is gonna have my ass for this! One of the joys of early Van Damme cinema was the elaborate explanations for his accent. Just make him a Canadian this time.

The main flaw here is that the fight scenes don't really work. The insane over-reliance on roundhouses, although amusing, really stretches credibility, as does the ludicrous plot and equally ludicrous characters. Kudos, though, for featuring Benson and Psycho from Stripes. Oh, and "I don't pay...I don't punk!" - brilliant. Perhaps an amusing diversion in the right (probably drunk) company, but I'd stick with Bloodsport for my Van Damme fix.

Some fun fight scenes, but the whole thing is so idiotic. It's frustrating how many of these movies seem to have decent foundations but then just phone in the effort to flesh them out. So many loose ends, incoherent scenes and half done characterizations really hold this back.

THis is not Van Dammes worst movie but it still is not good. I love me some Robert Guillaume.

This is a (89 minutes, with credits) film, well-shot prison/action-movie with an actually engaging(although slightly predictable) story, with some really entertaining supporting characters and all your favourite prison movie/90's movie cliches. Definitely one of the good Van Damme-pictures.

Of all the prison films I've seen I never would've thought one of the more claustrophobic and hellish in the genre would also be a JCVD movie. All fans of action cinema should see this one even just once to see a pretty terrorized performance from JCVD. He's almost always covered in sweat, grit and blood in this one.

The 'muscles from Brussels' was technically in his prime here, but his films until 1992 were mostly low rent jobs that were barely a step up from typical DTV fare. It has an unbelievable premise that is justified on shonky grounds, and the fight scenes are completely stock. The acting is pretty bad, and Sarafian directs with no sense of energy. Moreover, the villain is an uninteresting caricature reminiscent of the one from Cobra, only with less bite. For hardcore JCVD fans only.

One of Van Damme's earlier flicks which is actually not bad. Some good fight and action scenes, but of course over the top on the reality side of things.

The cop setup is lame, the martial arts only moderately effective when on display. Van Damme doesn't have the one-liners, humor or charisma of other action stars of the past, but his high-kicks sometimes help make up for it. The villain here is a bit more memorable than usual, but he's not onscreen nearly enough.

Pretty terrible, particularly since the fight scenes are so badly choreographed. It takes itself far too seriously, and you can't do a movie like this without at least some cheesy humour, something JCVD never manages as he seems to take his 'action star' role far more seriously than the rest of the world does.

A lot of kicking, lots of punching, lots of muscles, not a lot of acting, dialog or plot. Pretty standard Van Damme.

If you are curious what a prison is NOT like then I give you Death Warrant. the amount of lunacy behind the walls of the prison that Van Damme must infiltrate is overflowing. While the movie entertains us with plot, the action is probably sub-par for Van Damme of this era. Lots of kicks but thats about it.
