Grandpa Willis is still an action star. This is a somewhat less than satisfying remake of the classic urban revenge vigilante story. Unfortunately, this version adds nothing new to the mythos. The acting was somewhat underwhelming. To be fair, this is not a bad movie, it's just not spectacular in any way. At least it has a somewhat plausible, albeit overly convenient, story and had only a few plot holes. Good music and good production quality.

You'd think that leaving this in Roth's hands would be a good choice. He's spent the last twenty years wallowing around in gratuitous violence with little regard for tastefulness or mass market appeal. It's the perfect place for a remake of a dirty 70's revenge flick to be. At first glance, the action and violence is competently handled, too. But the end product is too safe, too tame, and not worthy of the name.

Death Wish is a pointless remake that offers absolutely nothing new or inventive to the exhausted revenge formulae. I don't know if the team behind this thought they were tackling the issue of gun crime with such an ill timed release but they approach the subject in an arrogant manor. I'm surprised to see Eli Roth offer such a bland experience and a disinterested Bruce Willis lacks the charisma he once boasted. Ultimately this remake is watchable for the most part but it's instantly forgettable.

Its a good thing I can jerk off with my left hand, because it would have been hard to do that AND fire my legally-obtained handgun into some half-empty Milwaukee's Best cans while watching Wee Willie Willis prove that the only thing that can save Chicago from deep dish pizza is a rich doctor and a week's worth of hoodies...if I was only able pleasure myself with my right.

Riding in on my high horse to bitch about topical school shootings (lol) and how this is the wrong time but then my horse is graphically shot by some fun Schlock. Bruce Willis kinda almost acts again.

Just go and watch the original with Bronson instead, as this flick is not really worth your time.

Holy shit, someone please have the decency to put Bruce Willis' acting career out of its misery! I'm sorry man, Die Hard is one of my top ten movies ever (not to mention Pulp Fiction, Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Die Hard sequels, etc.), but watching Willis sleepwalk disinterested through this film is PHYSICALLY PAINFUL. Bruce Willis is no longer an actor, he's a bald head who recites dialogue for a paycheck. Outside of that I kind of enjoy any sort of gory revenge thing but man alive.

This works fine as a revenge flick, but it barely touches on what made the original great. Unfortunately one of the things - the violent real world context that it was birthed in - can't be duplicated: New York used to be much more of a hell hole with a crime wave that was ever rising. It was a cathartic blast against criminal rights & legal technicalities taking precedence over the rights of non-criminals to feel safe at night. Bronson's vigilante resonated in a way Willis' doesn't.

Death Wish Lite should be the title here. Bruce Willis seems to be having fun and as the whole the movie is dumb fun. It's basically the Death Wish story distilled by mid '90s Bruce Willis action flicks. Not as good as the original or even the pseudo remake Death Sentence.

How did critics miss the criticism of gun culture? Roth is no great satirist, but he does have a sly way of masking social critiques behind the facade of straight genre pieces. He doesn't really push this tendency far enough here, so it's a bit of a missed opportunity, but there are some grim laughs to be had in Willis' bungling vigilante attempts and the sheer stupidity of the cops who remain three steps behind him. Willis' one liners are humorously deadpan, and the action is pleasingly OTT.

It's fine, passable if you want a revenge/vigilante flick to pass some time. Roth doesn't bring any real flair to make this stand out among all the other films of this ilk, but I enjoyed it. My problem is mostly with critical reception: they say it's thoughtless but it riffed on how easy it is to get a gun, how useless police are and if vigilantism is good or not. This stuff is hardly revelatory but it made me wonder if the critics and I watched the same movie.

Bruce Willis is having fun which is the reason why the movie actually works. Not much Eli Roth except a few graphic kills.

Death Wish is a pointless experience to put yourself through. It has some gruesome violence, lots of guns which are features more prominently than many of the actors, and a little bit of acting from Bruce Willis. Still, without much action and without a mystery or something to engage our brains, we're just watching a straightforward movie about a dude going around killing other dudes. Sometimes graphically, but never with any room for suspense. It's too boring to be worth anyone's time.

wide eyed, stressed as the inevitable trauma came rolling in to set off the movie. As the ride continued roth orchestrated anger, fanned the flames of bloodlust, finally when Willis murdered someone I cheered, laughed, revelled. I looked back like I was some sort of sicko for the carnal pleasure I took in the spectacle, despite being an action-junkie. I recognized how Roth played me and I loved it. It's pure exploitation. A piece of entertainment to hit you at the most base of levels

This is why, in rare cases, they remake movies; well, besides the money. To start off with, this one is better, and is equivalent with The Brave One, albeit for different reasons--not the least of which, its Bruce Willis doesn't disavow what the movie is about like Jodie Foster did, publicly anyway. It has an excellent plot with a couple of forgivable teensy-weensy plot holes that I have since blocked from my memory, involuntarily of course. But it makes up for that with its canny timeliness

Ah, Hank, why is every famous criminal right under your nose... "Breaking bad" aside, "Death wish" is a fine enough action movie with great narrative and directing. Also - tons of little details alongside the transformation of Bruce Willis, almost like fun, little Easter eggs. However, it is one of those mediocre movies that you won't be able to recall after some time.

Maybe the single worst movie I've ever seen, that actually took itself seriously. There's absolutely nothing engaging about this movie. It's just a straight-forward white knight tale, about what middle American men think they would do in this situation. There's no mystery, nothing unique or memorable. I just saw this movie, and honestly I couldn't recount a single scene in detail. Just don't watch it.

Death Wish's biggest issue is not being a generic straight forward revenge story, instead being utterly pointless in its gruesome violence. Nothing here suggests this needed to be made, and like most Bruce Willis movies today, he is there for the paycheck and nothing more. In the end, it should be in question if Willis even reads into his roles, as this was nothing more than a unnecessary, straight to TV level effort, to a remake that not many remember in the first place

The movie was kinda dumb.. in the right ways. the acting isnt anything to bust a nut about (bruce kinda sucks..) and the only really dramatic part that might be hard to stomach was the motivation of the film, the home invasion, which did give good push to support the revenge. But best of all, it for the most part, was unapologetic, and nowadays that alone is a MASSIVE breath of fresh air, though feels a bit meek compared to the orig. For some simple revenge fun, it's ...decent.

Passable but surprisingly bland remake of Bronson's iconically troubling original finds Willis in good form evoking Bronson's stone-faced hero. The view of the modern cityscape as a cess-pool of crime and violence doesn't really stack up; had it gone in a more satiric direction ala ROBOCOP, this could have been more fun and satisfying. Some creatively over-the-top moments of violence are highlights; on a side-note, there is *no way* Shue and Willis pass for a forty-something couple!

I can't remember ever seeing the original, but I'm sure it can't be quite as silly as this. I think amidst the nonsense it was trying to make some point about guns, but I'm buggered if I know what it was. Despite the subject matter and the violence, it doesn't feel anywhere gritty enough, the tone not heavy enough. As such it comes off as a fairly lightweight revenge flick that stretches suspension of disbelief. Fun for a while, with a decent cast, but largely forgettable.

Ignoring how bad the actual movie is (it's bad), the classlessness and tone-deafness to release a Death Wish remake in the middle of a reckoning with white people shooting black people without consequence, and coming firmly down on the side of "Gun violence is good!" is unbelievable dumb.

the dead-eyed cop-killer-saving soccer dad libtard snowflake turns vigilante after failing to save his family, a busty blonde in a commercial inspires him to buy a gun and browse some youtubes on how to fire it and don a hoodie and take down random minorities while the police pretend to give a shit. in its defence i feel like it's an all-encompassing south park-style pisstake, slyly ribbing all sides with some pretty bang-on observations even if the filmmaking itself is painfully rote.

I don't know if any remake is necessary, so it is probably redundant to call this anything other than that. "White guy takes law into his own hands" isn't anything new and I don't think Roth brings anything particularly interesting to the genre. Willis does seem like he gives a shit, which is better than most of his recent output.

Not an original idea. A bit cheesy and poorly acted. The actors do not fully sell the emotions from the 'violent act' through the film. Caters to conservative gun toting republican viewers who have hard-ons for guns and feel-good, retribution kills. Feels like the film was sponsored by the NRA.

Surprisingly well controlled for an Eli Roth film, although there are scenes of extreme violence. It's a pretty straightforward revenge film, which is not particularly bad, but it doesn't allow for any excitement. Felt pretty run of the mill and has a little star power brought on by Bruce Willis.

Roth setting up a gun control debate with "his own Get Out"(?) That might have been his noble agenda; he even generously gives us some guidelines in the film by showing us people debatting the paulkersey-issue on the radio: "look, this is how you do it". Too bad the film doesn't seem to have an emotionally/intellectually sincere moment in it to actually lead one to pause and think. On the other hand DW is violent but replaces the correct low-brow sleaziness with a disapponting comedic touch.

A plate imitation of the original (which itself I only like ironically). Eli Roth and Bruce Willis are a fantastic pairing because both are tired, old, and completely out of reasons to care. I think there was once some sort of message here but because everyone involved sucks, it's completely lost by the end.
