Jim Malloy returns from the Civil War to Texas to find his father, Colonel Malloy, leading a band of land grabbers and carpet-baggers during the Reconstruction Era. He learns of this from newspaper publisher Jonathan Taylor, who advocates the overthrow of Colonel Malloy's crooked regime, and his daughter Nan. Jim and his pal, "Happy" Snodgrass save Taylor from Malloy's henchmen, led by Idaho, and they side with the Governor's representative Brent Gordon against the gang. (imdb)

Wow, this was an overly preachy film that really lacked any fun.

Deep in the Heart of Texas (1942) is a western with a deep knock on Hitler as William Farnum runs the Texas territory during the Reconstruction Era like a brutal dictator. His son Johnny Mack Brown comes into town and tries to reform his crooked father with red, white and blue freedom talk.... and so starts the moral battle. What made me love this more than most B-westerns was seeing Tex Ritter joining forces with Brown and his sidekick Fuzzy Knight. Ritter looked much more at home here.
