'The Town' meets 'The Usual Suspects' in this gritty heist movie, with a dash of the 'Sicario' bridge scene for good measure. Unoriginal in every way. Littered with useless scenes that seem only to take up screen time. Butler is a bore and Ice Cube's son tries his hand at the worst British accent I've ever heard.

Butler's character would be a villain or at least secondary antagonist in any other movie, but Den of Thieves tries to make him relatable and worth rooting for as a protagonist. For me, it didn't work. The swaggering cop trope is bad enough but this guy is abusive to everyone and it's hard to root for a guy like that. I know that's the whole premise, but I just couldn't accept it. The thieves themselves were underdeveloped and the "twist" at the end could have been built up much better.

A poorly made 'Heat' ripoff. The second half is fun enough to maybe make it worth a watch, but I honestly won't be able to remember a single element of this movie in 6 months.

Den of Thieves wasn't entirely the movie I expected. It plays a lot on stuff films like "Heat" did. Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr are the stars of the show, and their pretty good all things considered. It's action sequences are quite entertaining, and the story progresses steadily yet not overly interestingly. It's a fun heist film that inherits a lot of elements from other films, but it's hard to say this will be memorable.

A capable cops and robbers flick with grit, an exciting heist, and a good twist is soured substantially by its terribly chauvinist treatment of women-they're only things to be controlled, even as it's trying and failing to make its males sympathetic (see the pointless prom date bit; Nick cheating on the mom, losing his daughters, going back to the strip club). Lose these scenes and you won't be breaking any ground in female representation but you sure will have a tighter and less gross script.

Pretty generic, and Butler is just bad. But for a mindless action flick you don't have to think about during or after it's ok.

Starts off strong with balanced characters on both sides of the law but it losses momentum about 90 minutes in and never quite gets back on its game. The end reveal was stupid to say the least and would've benefited from having a post credit scene similar to the one in "Sabotage". Entertaining enough but really a one and done kind of picture.

Pretty cool action movie that passes the time. I liked Gerard Butler the most, he was a very bad goodguy :D. Lame ass ending - has been done before, easy way out. Rest was pretty cool.

With a single glance, it's easy to see that the Den of Thieves publicity team is doing its best to market their film as a modern-day Western. Outlaws and Regulators, the posters and trailers whisper in a deep dusky tone. Choose your side. You can almost taste the wind-blown grit and hear a tumbleweed blowing by an abandoned inner-city lot. And the film does all it can to bolster this violent story's gun-on-your-hip vibe.

An exciting ride. Lots of wonderfully tense moments with a great mixture of intrigue and action. Overall a great heist movie. Though I wish the family drama sections had been left out. They didn't feel like they added much to the overall story.

This has aged really well with me. It could have used its time better, maybe not spending so much time on the least interesting bits, but I still wasn't bored during it. It is fun enough with an intricate enough plot to be engaging, and watching the gamesmanship between Butler and Schreiber was genuinely entertaining as well. This won't win awards, and there are certainly writing issues (for a team of military dudes they were sort of incompetent at the end), but this gave me what I wanted hard.

Smarter than most of the same nature, Den of Thieves does not reveal its true nature and plot twist in anyway shape or form. Butler turned in a suprisingly well timed performance and Schrieber played the villain very well. O'Shea Jackson Jr gives probably the best performance in a film with many layers and plot points. Solidly entertaining throughout. A fun film no doubt.

Watch: Background at home | For me this felt like a different writer did a story for every main character and they tried to stitch their stories together after. There's a great idea here, but when the shootout happened I had no idea who I was rooting for (nor if I should care if somebody got hit). It's an ok as a background thing, but as a story it needs work.

forgot to rate, really enjoyed the Heat-light start, then sorta gradually lost me after that. But worth a watch. * watched it again, it’s better than my first review suggests. monster energy heat but somehow it’s good

Look, I know people didn't like this movie much, but give it a chance regardless. It's your usual cliché heist movie, but crossed with The Shield. Every character is both likable and hatable, which is interesting. The tension builds up fast and never drops throughout the movie, it comes with scenes of urban combat that are waaaaay better than your usual movie shootouts, and the plot keeps you hooked all throughout its predictable but well orchestrated twists. I liked it, don't @ me.

The EMP and crawling through air duct cliche part was dumb. Otherwise the lack of any obvious cgi and meaty gunshots make this a step up, but then the characters aren't that interesting. More tension building long wordless shots could have helped.

Utterly mediocre crime movie. I hear that after aiming and failing to remake 'Heat', the original movie title of 'Tepid' was deemed a little too on the nose so they went with Den of Thieves!

Impressive plot, excellent acting, and the action scenes are first class. Another job well done by Gerrard Butler, while Pornstache from Orange is the New Black does a fantastic job as well. Very well-produced heist film.

A little convoluted, but so well-shot, angry and objective duel of gangs -- one is trying to rob a bank, the other, led by a gangster cop, is trying to kill them. Basically a Heat ripoff in the middle of two extravagant set pieces in the beginning and in the end. Butler is good as hell. Not quite sure if I love the finale -- Ice Cube Jr. was the real mastermind behind the Federal Reserve heist ("I control my environment") -- but its enough pulpy to keep any human being interested.

I don't understand why they even bothered with the character development parts since their only purpose was to just extend the running time, which was too much for a film with such thin a story. Tries to be grand but the script is not good enough for it. Definition of so so..

While Gudegast sure doesn't reinvent the genre, he executes the rules in the rulebook very well. This is a very decent gritty heist movie in which the cops are as though as the robbers. When the movie just focusses on the heist it engages plenty. Unfortunately the running time is pumped up by spending way too much time on Gerard Butler's sob divorce story. Which, despite its long runtime, leaves no room for the other characters to deepen a bit too.

Although the script is actually very simple, the characters, action and tension are catchy. Den of Thieves follows Heat's footsteps but manages to do well on its own. A very solid movie.

Oh.... they made Heat.. Like damn near literally. It's 1995's Heat beat for beat but mediocre. From the starting botched score casualties to the ending showdown between the lead character on each side of the law, they ape Heat's structure and character dynamics one to one. At most its minus bond reselling & romance subplots; adding an inane switcharoo and couple extra scenes with extra convoluted ways for the leads to meet beforehand; but straight-up ctrl-f "find & replace" depth overall.

Would have rated it higher if it weren't for the solid hour of empty calories drama that, instead of humanizing the characters, makes them look even more like caricatures of machismo. Once the actual robbery goes underway, it's good, but too little too late.
