Deprisa, deprisa

As I see it, the implication is that these young robbers are part of a generation whose childhoods have been taken from them, and their reaction to this loss is a complete and utter rejection of social norms. The story itself isn't much to write home about, but its historical relevance, combined with its "criminality = freedom" angle, makes for a fun viewing. It's like Spain's version of BONNIE AND CLYDE.

There's some awkwardness in the acting that is partly appropriate and partly distracting, but otherwise a really good mix of energetic and sedate scenes that build a good new wavish plot into the 80s Spanish setting. As such it's an interesting commentary on the generational and political divides of a country undergoing the awkwardness of transition mixed with the wider pop culture and concerns of the era.

Quietly powerful, Saura proves again he can really make movies. The four leads, all amateurs, under his guidance give compelling performances--there isn't a false note from any of them. His camera observes these disaffected youths impassively, and the simplicity of approach is its power. To his credit, he refrains from any false moralizing...Saura himself said these "delinquents" are as normal as anyone else, and that their problems are everyone's, then shows us why.
