Der Bau

This is what happens when you bloat an unfinished short story into a two hour film. The film tries to create an illusion of profundity, but it ultimately has little to say. Kafka's original writing is smothered by the inept addition of new plot elements; the protagonist's new family is particularly ill-considered and offers nothing that's even remotely intelligent or interesting. The visuals are occasionally evocative, but they would have been best suited to a straight 30-minute adaptation.
