Der Hauptmann

Though extremely heavy subject matter, an excellent film. The cinematography is second to none and outstanding performances.

Brutal. Circumstances present themselves and its hard not to get caught up in the spiral of violence. Weird ending.

This rating is my initial reaction but I need to think about it for a while. Still haven't quite swallowed it!

A bit too cartoonishly evil to allow for an interesting portrait, especially considering the visual style as contrast.

The war is a charade. The man who's got the best and cleanest suit and the most fluent talks will run the show. No matter how inhuman or banal his orders are. No matter how small he is inside his clothes. The end falls in parts and ruins the mood a bit.

Banality of evil.

Schwentke, a capable, yet utterly impersonal thriller and horror craftsman, has been slumming it for a decade with two Divergent entries, Red, R.I.P.D., and other Hollywood dreck. He now returns to his homeland to vaguely make a cautionary tale about authoritarian power, but mostly to wallow his talents in debauchery. A lockstep sickness pervades this symphonic accumulation of atrocities and efficient storytelling. I find the film and the act of watching it entirely tasteless.

Terrific, scary and fascinating.

Seems a bit undecided at times how it wants to tell its story (and could have done with better editing towards the end), but it is captivating enough that we willingly follow its shifts from light-hearted to morally questioning to absurd. Riveting, yet at the same time profoundly discomfiting.
