Balduin is a popular, handsome student, the best fencer in town, in rivalry with his friend Dahl for the affections of Lydia, the innkeeper's niece. While the students are celebrating Lydia's birthday, the opera singer Julia Stella arrives at the inn and Balduin' is immediately infatuated with the glamorous singer. The mysterious Dr. Carpis intervenes, but the price will be higher than Balduin can ever imagine. He risks his sanity and his life - perhaps his soul - haunted by his own reflection. (imdb)

Despite Walbrook's intense performance, this pales in comparison to the 1926 version with Conrad Veidt.

The Student of Prague of works well for the sound age as well. The 1935 talkie has Anton Walbrook and he does the role justice. No worse then the other German legends that portrayed the part. I'm one that prefer the original 1913 version, especially if you consider the age it was made. Takes a while before it got dark. Starts off with songs and happy life and then it drags a little. But the ending is strong and makes an heavy impression as Walbrook is haunted by his own spirit and goes mad.
