Dersu is a magnificent character but the presentation left something to be desired. My primary complaint is that by crafting the film as a flashback where we know that Dersu's fate Kurosawa robs the film of its joyous moments and fills it with a pessimistic fatalism that doesn't mesh with the rest of the film's tone. The film is also somewhat slow and detached, but if you're willing to put in the effort there's quite bit there to reflect on.

Outstanding effort from Kurosawa that reminded me a lot of Herzog's "Stroszek".

I don't disagree that earlier Kurosawa is great, but I find my self most enthralled by his work in color. Dersu Uzala is at once a beautiful meditation on friendship as well as a tragic reminder of the antagonistic nature of contrasting environments.

Glorious yet humble movie that loves humanity & the natural world but also understands & respects their inherent tragedies. Like Herzog if you replace his "nihilism" with humanism. Wonderfully acted & filmed with perfect pace & fitting score. Allows the majesty of the locations to completely take over the drama in several unforgettable scenes. Evokes a uniquely quiet & meditative atmosphere that brings tremendous weight & depth to a story that otherwise might come across as simple or cliched.

A visually stimulating and enthralling experience, with an epic sweep to rival Lean & Leone; Kurosawa using the stunning deserts & lush greenery of Siberia to magnificent effect, while centering the narrative on the touching friendship between “odd couple” Solomin & Munzuk. Minor quibbles: the pacing bogs down somewhat before the first half intermission, and the conflict of the “savage” re-entering civilisation feels rushed and underdeveloped, slightly undermining the impact of the finale.

Beautiful film shot in Russian Far East taiga wilderness, a tale of wonderful friendship between an educated soldier, explorer and a humble, good-hearted hunter of the wild. It feels contemplative and warm, though it does explore also a bit less nice themes. Slow, beautiful, peaceful. Great movie. And those Russian laughs, hah!

The friendship at the heart of the film is very touching. When Vladimir and Dersu see each other for the first time in several years, the excitement in both of their voices is heartwarming. I really want a good transfer on Blu-Ray because the landscapes and the wilderness would really pop. Even still, it's a breathtaking odyssey. It's great watching the Russians, at first, ridicule Dersu for his odd way of speaking and living before developing love, understanding, and respect.

Real beautiful looking. Maybe like a much more tender Herzog film. where an outsider is placed in a situation in which success is futile but the insiders could learn from said outsider.

Dersu Uzala has an epic feel for landscape, but it tells a simple tale of friendship that transcends culture, class, and language. How is deep, long-lasting friendship between the Siberian trapper and the Russian surveyor even possible? It emerges from shared experience (each saves the other's life), mutual respect, and a sense of common humanity. Kurosawa shows that in cross-cultural human relations, what we share in common is far more important than the ways in which we are different.

I saw the trailer for this move after the movie itself, and it had the line "Roger Corman presents" at the beginning. Well, I have no idea what Roger Corman had to do with this movie, but this is not the kind of movie I think of when his name comes up.

The moments of tension are good, but too much plodding through the wilderness in between. Dersu is too perfect as the wizened friend of the forest, dropping little nuggets of wisdom, being charmingly enigmatic, saving lives, impressing the cityfolk, and proving himself to be master of anything and everything to do with the outdoors. The overall theme of friendship is strong, if a bit sappy, and there are a few great scenes, but overall, blah.

06 Mart 08 &Dostluk uzerine yapilmis, tam akira kurosowa tarzinda bir film.Maksim Munzuk, Dersu'yu mukemmel oynamis.

Refreshingly different--you are unlikely to see any film quite like this one (though Jeremiah Johnson would be a ballpark side-recommendation if you like this one.) See it to see a wholly different perspective on life and the world from yours.

The film simply depicts the unlikeliest of friendship between a hunter and an officer and the time they spend together. There are passing references on the effect of (either good or bad) the increasing interaction of the urban human population and the remote wilderness. To believe that this aspect forms the central core of the movie and the movie is trying to highlight it and pass on some related message would be over interpretation of these references.

This is a beautiful film, and so much more than a simple Russification story. I feel like it not only pays a tender homage to people like Dersu, who can read the essence of nature and feel truly reconciled with it, but also exposes nature's capacity to connect Different people - something that can feel restricted by "developed" societies. Kurosawa knows how to capture really charming and visually stunning sequences without oversaturating them. I love the score's fleeting surrealism too.

Beautiful (both visually and otherwise) Kurosawa picture about an unlikely friendship between a Soviet army captain explorer and a resourceful Asian hunter who meet in Siberia when the former is exploring the area in the early 1900s. Maksim Munzak (the hunter) is an incredibly compelling character, and the captain (Yuri Solomin) is good as well, but perhaps the best character in the film is Siberia itself, with all its beauty and dangers. The setting is used to maximum effect. Brilliant.
