It's Noel Coward: you know the rest of the movie is there to support repartee. When these actors start drinking, tell anyone else in the room with you to "Shush! I want to hear this bit." From a time in movies when guys in Tuxes in slums were just calling in on old friends. From when Gary Cooper was still 2nd credit to Frederic March! Pfft! Gary out-acted him, and landed the only decent punch. Now on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boQQnENbnWo&t=54m50s

Great concept and some fun chemistry, but it's sunk by wooden blocking/acting and a script that fails to push the boundaries like it should.

At one point, one of the characters declares that they're "playing a joke on nature", but the story shows that love that goes beyond our society's monogamy-centric conception of relationships is absolutely natural, and that trying to squish it down or cut it up to fit it into those socially accepted boxes is damaging, pointless, and leaves nobody happy. Plus, let's face it, the boys totally made some discoveries after they got drunk that made the whole situation a lot easier.

Ernst Lubitsch directs a Ben Hecht adaptation of a Noel Coward play ... could you ask for much better than that? Truthfully speaking, it's not among Lubitsch's very best, but it's delightful and a wonderful example of what pre-code films can offer ... a ferociously adult comedy that manages to be very charming and sophisticated and not really smutty in any sense.

The movie starts off being lots of fun and quite funny with loads of verbal wit. However my enjoyment soon went down as I found the Gilda character to be a completely selfish piece of shit that did whatever she wanted to whoever she wanted and she didn't give a crap who she hurt as long as she was having a good time. For the life of me I could figure out why and of the three male characters even liked her. The resolution of the film pissed me off and knocked my rating down quite a bit.

A romantic comedy with real intelligence and wit. It's easy to forget they even exist since, to my knowledge, one hasn't been made in America in at least 40 years. Frederic March is especially good.

Design for Living is adroitly made but arguably lacks a certain vigour that the best screwball comedies of the era tend to abound with. It's light and frequently amusing though, with some satisfyingly risqué humour in Hecht and Coward's script and a story that stays fresh until the very end. March is the better of the two leading men, but Miriam Hopkins outdoes them both.

Wohl bemerkt: Lubitschs Zweifel an diesen Werten wirken dabei nie verletzend!(...) While "Design for Living" feature loads of excellent examples of the Lubitsch touch, like the measuring of beds in public display, it lacks the Lubitsch flow. And for something as immoral a subject, even for pre-code times, a 3-way relationship can be looked upon, I didn't feel Lubitsch banged the morality hard enough to pinpoint his touches. So in many ways a vague Lubitsch comedy. It's still a high quality Lubitsch film that's got many smiling moments and naughty bits.

Very much a filmed stage play and also very much pre-code. Frederic March and Gary Cooper are no match for Miriam Hopkins though they try their best. Wonderfully funny.

A typically excellent Ernst Lubitsch comedy, this one about a menage a trois with the sexy Miriam Hopkins in the center of it all. She's fantastic in it. I enjoyed the entire film, but completely lost it at the end, when Cooper and March hide behind that changing thing rich people had back in the day.

Lubitsch is a bit of a mixed bag for me, but I enjoy this one. The dynamic between the three leads is amusing enough to carry the movie, and the story in general proves interesting. The comedy is sorely hit-or-miss, but, as with all Lubitsch, there's an irresistible, charming energy.
