Outro filme que planejava ver só depois de ler o livro que tenho aqui (do Nabokov), mas a minha vontade de honrar a goleada da Alemanha em cima do Brasil foi mais forte.

Other than Fassbinder's preference for his social themes to be worked through the 30s, I'm not sure why the political themes needed to be here. Still, this is definitely madness. Dirk Bogarde and Andréa Ferréol both fit into the fold splendidly.

A man comes up with a crappy scheme. Perhaps something interesting could have been done with this story, but the style of direction, particularly (but not only) of the actors, is impossible to like and impossible to ignore. Just about everything seems wrong. I have not read the novel, but it seems hard to believe that there is much connection between Nabokov's intentions and Fassbinder's film. Once again I am mystified by the reverence in which this filmmaker seems widely to be held.

nisan 12, ist film fest & Fassbinder'in Despair filmi beni icine cekmedi. Ancak icine ceken izleyicinin akil & ruh sagligini etkileyecek bir is. Despair, -maalesef- izledigim ilk Fassbinder filmi. Sanirm Fassbinder'a baslamak icin pek uygun bir film degil. Despair, aslnda goruntu yonetmenlgi, dekor & kamera kullanmi ile zenginlesms bir film. Filmn bu zenginligi es gecilmemeli. (Despair, Fassbinder'in 31. yasinda cektigi 31. uzun metraj filmiymis. Bu nasil bir yaraticiliktir, calisma temposudur.)

It might just be Andréa Ferréol, but to me this felt a lot more like a bizarre, unintentional prototype for early narrative Greenaway than any other Fassbinder film i've seen (maybe due to the oddly matched sensibilities of Stoppard, Nabakov, and him, all quite talented in their own right). This quite possibly accounts for why it doesn't seem to be one of his more celebrated works, due to how little it necessarily feels like "his", but nonetheless i think it's probably his funniest at least.
