I haven't seen a film so beautiful and moving in such a long time. I have seen destructive education systems first hand and this film strikes a chord. As expected great filmmaking, stellar acting and a lasting effect.

An impressive ensemble headlined (but not defined) by Adrien Brody. And as a substitute teacher myself, the surface subject matter is of course appealing, but as a human, the movie's deeper meaning screams at me. This tests us as an audience and is not meant to "entertain". It's over the top in a lot of ways, but it uses that hyperbole quite effectively as a means of getting across that the educational and societal systems we depend on are fucked, by forcing people who care not to care anymore.

Detachment has a detached editing and cinematography style. A detached narrativ and is loose genrewise. It also has some of the greatest actors in hollywood - too many - to help the movie seem more detached. It all starts with quote by Camus saying he is detached from himself and the world. Detachment also has some ok, albeit a bit detached, scenes, and Caan is wonderfully vulgeur which makes detachment a barely ok film. Parts of the Brody- story is both horrible and sensibel; detached?

It tackles some themes that end up being of interest to pretty much any viewer and explores them quite well. I was happy to have about twenty "oh, that's!" moments with a bunch of actors that I like. It's a great watch and a fantastic drama.

I really wanted to love this movie. It had a few brilliant scenes but the rest was rather abysmal. An awesome cast mostly wasted. Boring elevator music. The close up semi-documentary talking to the camera style wore thin quickly. Adrien Brody is mostly sullen. Christina Hendricks was gorgeous. Sami Gayle really stood out as the young hooker. It was too slow, too sad & discouraging. Inadequate writing and unsatisfying directing. But worth a second watch.

"you may see me, but i'm hollow" lol, there's only so much Brody can do with writing like that. and as always, Christina Hendricks does her best to ruin every frame she's in.

As one would expect from Kaye, this is very in your face but it also contains very interesting ideas and dialogue, and the performances are terrific throughout. It's just too messy and mishandled to be considered great or even truly good.

Not the sort of movie anyone wants to see. An important portrait of the crushing burden of caring, while pretending not to, in an institution and society that works against value. Not for the weak. Not entertaining. Great film.

An "aims high, falls short" affair that touches on contentious issues but fails to build up to a satisfying conclusion. Brody's excellent and the Erica subplot hits a genuine dramatic note, but the rest came off as preachy and insubstantial and failed to win me over.

Suffused with self-pity and infatuated with its own depictions of gloom, doom and despair in a public school, it was inevitable that the film would include at least a couple of suicides. Whatever genuine concern it shows with the state of US education therefore comes off as crass and shallow. The film ends with Brody reading from Edgar Allan Poe. No lie.

Rarely does a film impact my worldview, but this one managed to move me. Some of the scenes felt awkward, and others felt belabored, overdone, and melodramatic. Still, there were a few rare moments which had me breathless - not in suspense, nor in awe, but in an unrelenting empathy. A more rigid plot would have ruined it. This film tells of a particular sentiment, not a neatly wrapped series of events. Strong performances and mostly believable characters sell it, making this one a powerful film.

Tony Kaye is coming off as a poor man's Oliver Stone - a complete lack of subtlety in film-making compensated by style and mood. Detachment is perhaps the least subtle, and utterly miserable, film that could be made given the restriction of "film set in a high school". Brody gives an excellent and stunning performance but is dragged down by the rest of the film's focus on sheer misery. Perhaps cutting the fat, improving the pacing and maybe not spelling out all the themes would have helped.

The acting in Detachment is fairly strong, but only if you can accept it as a proper melodrama, if not then comes off a bit excessive. The cast works well for the most part, though it seems as if they just cast big name actors with decent abilities rather than finding people who would actually fit more fluidly in some cases. However, the film's biggest problems comes from its messy, unfocused narrative, which throws in so many unfulfilled and dead-end story-lines that it begins to elicit apathy.

I give this an above average score due mostly to some strong performances and accurate storytelling. The fact that it is sloppy and unfocused is probably intentional but at times is becomes a distraction. Worth seeing as Brody is excellent as is most of the cast (even Liu who I normally find nauseating).

Some of the attempts to portray detachment come off as nihilistic, but the full force of this script really pushes the audience. You won't find yourself smiling as the cast does a great job of showing where the educational system has come in 2011. Frightening and difficult to watch, but very good filmmaking.

I simply hope some will take notice and appreciate it for what it is. But you gotta commit to watching it all. If I'd have had to quit in the middle, I probably wouldn't have gone back to finish it either. After all this re-consideration, I'm upgrading it to a 10/10--Masterpiece. Available on VOD.

School is hell. Life is hell. There is no hope. We are all doomed. Tragedy is everywhere. Old people shit themselves. Kids are disrespectful (they are good kids inside, but they never had a chance, derp). Kids are prostitutes (with a hearts of gold, derp derp). Don't dare to smile, public education is a tragic thing. If you are a teacher, don't reject fat girls, they will suicide (and then you will have to quote Poe).

A marvellous character study that examines with dark, unpleasant themes with confidence and passion. Director Tony Kaye doesn't hold back in this dissection of a broken system breaking people. I'm not sure if the cinema-verité style always works, but the raw material - and performances - are more than enough to transcend it.

The movie handles many aspects of the issue in modern day society. All these issues are dealt as parallel stories with one common thread being Henry(Adrien Brody). The performance of Adrien Brody is amazing. The biggest drawback of the movie being its ending. Over all a very decent movie.

If not 4 the honest sense of risk & humanity we get from Brody & 2 of his charges as they emotionally connect, Kaye's eye-rollingly overheated direction would make the ham-fisted MTVisms unwatchable. It threatens 2 ruin the film's message: a sorely needed palliative 2 the teacher-saves-troubled-students genre that praises rare, extraordinary teachers & ignores the average, well-intentioned teachers around them. It's un-pc & isn't feel-good, but it's about time some1 laid big blame on bad parents

Among other dynamite cock-eyed star turns featured here, Brody brings himself to bear in his role as a man who has grown averse to emotional complications and yet becomes entangled in them during his latest public school subbing gig in Tony Kaye's bitter, Stone-ian return to the helm, which is so urgent, emotionally branding and full of blindsidingly outstanding performances and scenes that even its stylistic unevenness is refreshing.

It's well put together, and there were moments of an amazing film, but the whole thing was to exaggerated. That many bad things happening at once works for the movie I guess, but it's just not at all realistic. Adrien Brody gives a fantastic performance, and the speech Lucy Liu gives to the girl at one point was really emotional. I saw the suicide a mile away, so it wasn't very impactful for me. The hooker character reminded me of a young Natalie Portman, which is a good thing.

Intensely emotive exploration of a broken education system and the damaging effects it has on teachers, pupils and wider society. Detachment presents fundamental human solutions, writ large in the actions of Henry and the loving relationship that forms between him and Erica: open yourself up and reach out to the people around you. This is a softly spoken and moving film about the power of empathy and need for ameliorative action, that will benefit those who can open up and process it honestly.

I kind of wish Adrien Brody would detach himself from Hollywood. I've never really liked him as an actor. The thing is, I think he whispers his lines too much and then calls that acting. This movie was depressing. First of all it was almost a giant ad for "WE HATE NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND" and this movie doesn't let you forget that. Then Brody has unhealthy attachments to underage girls (living with a prostitute for most of the movie)...

Definitely feels unfortunately truncated, but the messiness of this film doesn't assuage any of the emotional power it has, which works so brilliantly through the performances of Brody and Gayle. Contains the kind of strong, earned sentimentality that breaks through its conventionality and will certainly deeply affect those the closer they are to this material.

This film is melodrama on steroids, so go in expecting that. It is excess done well. But, there are too many characters with too-brief stories attached, & it disrupts engagement. There seems too much focus on framing the moral goodness of the protaganist. Too many close-ups, too much queasy camera & long soundtrack. But if you like emotional intensity, it'll all work wonders. Brilliant acting, if at times over-wrought in context. The hallmark is lovely prose narration, apt, wise & true to life.

A highly uneven, rather hysterical screenplay (by a former teacher) is brought to life by complicated but uneven direction featuring uneven performances. Parts of it are downright bad, but a few of the speeches hit the target. Despite its weaknesses and its generally exaggerated style, and a narrative built on clichés, somehow it does still manage to generate a bit of affective power.
