Based on novel, it was already made into a movie multiple time before. Poor, overacting by SRK and Aish did the damage. On top of that sloppy storytelling by SLB.

The songs are fun. The rest of it is nearly unwatchable. They should have distilled the film down to its musical numbers... maybe I'm just not a Bollywood kind of guy, but man I've rarely been so bored.

Huge (jaw dropping proportions) production value... Compared to this Moulin Rouge looks like a home video

The musical numbers are fine. The problem is the ridiculous story. Every time I see two star-crossed young lovers at center stage in a movie (again), I want to walk in with a megaphone and exclaim, "LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADES!!!!!" at them. Also, it's hard to take a story full of characters who indulge in dowries and caste systems and stuff about whores being EVIL very seriously. There's a reason we don't have customs like that in the US (at least the first two); they're barbaric

I felt that this movie had a lot of potential and might have actually been sad if the viewer was given an actual insight into Dev's youth (besides his whippings) along with his growing love for Paro. I just didn't feel like they were meant to be together. In fact, my favorite character in the movie was Chandramukhi who does not get nearly enough screen time. This could have been a good tragedy if the presentation wasn't so shallow and contrived. It was pretty though...and the music elevates it.
