Largely succeeds in its big ambition, but there are a few too many dinner dialogues and a couple of points get made rather heavy-handedly. Beautiful to look at and quite captivating for a three-hour runtime. The male lead also indeed is entirely believable and deserves his award.

Beautiful and elegiac, a sweeping view of the tremendous change in China over the last 20 years, and of the things that never change: our guilt, our doubt, and our love.

Ülkenin 1 çocuk engeli yüzünden sıkıntılar yaşayan aile, hayata tutunmaya çalışır. Vicdan azabı teması işlenmiş. Yönetmen filmi uzatmış ki Nuri Bilge Ceylan olmana gerek yoktu. Bölük pörçük kurgusu, filmde dikkat kaçırıyor. Erkek oyuncu Wang Jingchun çok iyi. Hayat devam ediyor

The movie is capable of displaying emotions in a very subtle way, it all comes from their lives, death/loss, state control that causes even more pain and fear. There are some very good scenes. Still, sometimes the way the story is told coming and going from each moment in time sometimes looks excessive.

Totally engaging emotional drama and the backdrop of cultural change in China is fascinating.
