As its title implies, this is a diabolically clever thriller that slowly draws you into the characters' twisted world before delivering a fantastic gut-punch of an ending. A classic of suspense that stands toe-to-toe with Hitchcock's best.

Fantastic. The characters, the locations, the constant tension... it all worked together splendidly. I really did not see the ending coming, for which I blame the movie for sucking me in and not allowing me to try and piece the facts together.

Took a little while to get going for me, but once it did...hoo boy. I have to admit to telegraphing the ending fairly early in the movie, but that didn't hamper my enjoyment of it at all--especially the last 20-30 minutes, which were very tense and well done. I can see how this could have really done a number on audiences back when it was released. This kind of quality film reminds me a lot of something Hitchcock would do, and I can't think of a bigger compliment than that.

The main reason I go out of my way to look for Criterion movies. This pre-'60s Gothic classic has one of the greatest twist endings in the history of cinema. Like The Wages of Fear, it does take some time to get going, but once it's built up some momentum you'll be astonished at the amount of vintage suspense that this film packs.

What I find most fascinating about this is how Clouzot didn't shoot it with an overabundance of style. It's stylish, yes, but in a very subdued and naturalistic way. What this technique does is create a sense of reality all throughout that allows us to get wrapped up in the situation. The dread and tension builds so naturally. It's only after the movie is over that I looked back and realized how sneaky and intelligent the whole thing was. Clouzot had played me like a fiddle. Bravo.

This is a great example of suspense being used on a level that is ever so slightly increased bit by bit, in line with a pyschological degeneration, ala Hitchcock at his best. Shot with film noir like lighting and sets, the ending is remarkable, full of utter dread; then finally climaxing with one of the best twists ever. And still we leave with questions, but also with certain scenes etched on our psyche, as we do with all good cinema.

This was a great thriller, this is how horror should be made. The story is really engaging, the acting is very good, and the characters are fantastic. I was really dragged into the mystery and anticipation on what was going to happen, the building to the final scene is intense and you realize that this building began at the start of the movie. You can see why Hitchcock wanted this story and why then Thomas Narcejac and Pierre Boileau went to write another masterpiece as "Vertigo"

Its twists and turns are telegraphed a million miles in advance, but somehow one never minds. Even at the "shocking climax" you smile and nod knowingly, and leave with the awareness of having been manipulated by Clouzot just as the Vera Clouzot character is manipulated by her tormentors. Very slick, very clever, but rather like an onion that's all skin.

A classic of the French cinema. The movie is really great, especially for lovers of film-noir. Featuring a perfect rhythm and built with extraordinary ability, achieves a high level of suspense, especially in its first half. A very well-crafted and scripted mystery, but I think that, despite the similarities, this is hardly a Hitchcock-like film. In a way, Hitch's camera delivers only suspense, to the point that is easier to connect with the characters than with the mystery itself. The connections between Diabolique and Psycho are not emotional or technical. It's all about plot resources and solutions. And Hitch shot this kind of story like no one else.

Simmering thriller is occasionally sluggish (and a little clumsy) in establishing the groundwork of the story, but once it kicks into gear it is dynamite, with a beautifully venal performance from Signoret the highlight. Builds to an extremely tense finale, and an amusing epilogue ending with a warning not to tell your friends about the plot twists!

Diabolique is a great mystery that keeps you guessing until its final moments and beyond. I had chills when they were looking at a photo of the students and the school with a magnifying glass. The detective character was fun to watch. This was interesting to view closely to Taste of Fear. Both movies included drowning and many other similarities. I love this quote reported by Roger Ebert, "A man wrote to Alfred Hitchcock: 'Sir, After seeing `Diabolique,' my daughter was afraid to take a bath. No

Incredibly creepy and suspenseful horror/thriller. The chiaroscuro lighting is used sparingly and effectively to strengthen very hallucinogenic and frightening imagery. The acting is solid throughout, especially by the fragile lead, who is like a scared rabbit for the whole film. The ending has one of the best twists of classic cinema. An excellent example of how you don't need dissonant music to create atmosphere. The only thing that holds it back is the slightly over-long exposition.

Almost perfect, but for the snoopy detective - he seems kind of squeezed into the plot.
Other than that, it's neat and dark and thrilling. I particularly enjoyed the hints of duality and illusion: the two antagonic women (from head to toe), the perfect mirror shots of Vera Clouzot.

A great Hitchcock copycat that uses all his greatest hits: a scheming blonde, confined spaces, tortured leads, inept authorities, shadows, and scary stairs. But Clouzot is better when with his women protagonists. Obviously, what the women do is wrong. But the human aspect comes through as Vera shows a great deal of guilt. The ending is in Scooby Doo territory with one act that I'm not even sure is a crime, in addition to a needless plot twist. But those are minor points. Highly recommended.

(SPOILER ALERT): It's praised for its storytelling and craftsmanship, but this viewer found it difficult to really connect with it beyond the level of craft until the finale, which is quite brilliant and completely unexpected. The acting is good, especially from Vera Clouzot in a rather tragic role given the actual circumstances of her real life death, and Clouzot tightens the narrative screws like clockwork, which is part of the problem: it's ruthlessly mechanical. Perhaps a rewatch is needed.

Now THAT is how to make a suspense film. Clouzot certainly knew what he was doing. What do you say about near-perfection? Clouzot himself: "I sought only to amuse myself and the little child who sleeps in all our hearts-the child who hides her head under the bedcovers and begs, 'Daddy, Daddy, frighten me.'" Pauline Kael's dry comment on this quote: "Clouzot does it, all right."

Saw this movie a few years ago, so my memory of it isn't exactly fresh, but I can safely say that this is an excellent movie all-round. This film is so tense that only Hitchock could match with it.

Above average suspense. Could have done a more decent job with the McGuffins though.

Becomes extremely immersive once the inexplicable occurs, from there you are simply following the threads left by Clouzot & co. I would say the final scene is a direct influence to the unnatural transcendence scene in The Ring. Excellent use of silence too.

It's courageous about how dark it is and Clouzot nails some -I'll say it pretending no one else has- Hitchcock-esque displays of slow-burn, black-and-white suspense. I just guess the acting and plotting were too outrageous for me to get into this too much.

Great thriller. The movie builds up tension really well and the last 10 minutes are extremely tense and creepy. Whether Hitchcock himself could have made it a better movie, I don't know. It doesn't really matter because this version is very good.

Diabolique is so far ahead of its time, it looks into the future and nods at Psycho and The Shining. It's got twists, it's got style, it's got suspense, it's got a homoerotic subtext! It's a keeper. Score is not a grade.

It had such terrific suspense and tension throughout. It felt like a great, genuine mystery story. The ending was brilliant. It certainly went out on a high note. It's seriously impressive given it's more than 50 years old, and it was still enthralling and kept me guessing.

The innermost circles of hell are reserved for child molesters and people who spoil movies. This film plays, depending on your taste either pleadingly or just plain playfully with this. And by golly I love it.

Diabolique is as great and thrilling as anything Hitchcock directed.

I couldn't really give a fuck about Agatha Christie-type plots, twists, etc., but such things are wielded brilliantly here in that the plot becomes a vehicle for pure cinematic surrealism and terror. Very well done and massively influential film.

The movie is so very much great, with scenes elongated to keep the suspense and much intrigue to keep the film shrouded in mystery. Yet, I really wish the film ended differently, with the last quarter of the film feeling like a slap to the face. Still does not diminish the quality of the film up to that point.

I had a nitpick about the ending but the final title card said not to spoil it so I guess y'all will have to stay in the dark here.

Sort of the French version of Hitchcock. Probably Clouzot's best, along with Wages of Fear.
