Diary of a Chambermaid

Sex, religion and death on a domestic scale, all taboo when treated with Buñuelian honesty and humour. A fancy girl from Paris becomes entangled in the debauched habits of a provincial household and adeptly takes advantage. Such a storyline could easily descend into gratuity, but Buñuel is much better than that. Moreau is delightfully manipulative as Celestine. Buñuel is just hinting here at what he will fully realise in his second French phase (30 years after the first).

Bunuel at his most lacking. Mind you, it is Luis Bunuel. He makes even lacking seem great.
