Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules
Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) returns to overcome ridiculous obstacles in this sequel to the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid adaptation, based on the books by Jeff Kinney. This time around, Greg must cope with the habits of his insufferable brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick). For some reason, Greg's mom Susan (Rachael Harris) and dad Frank (Steve Zahn) are convinced that the brothers should bond.

I found myself enjoying this one more than I thought I would. I know it's suppose to appeal to those who read the books (and I don't remember this book too well at the moment), but it has some fairly funny moments. I could definitely see an entire family sitting down and enjoying this together.

With the second installment, we find Greg beginning to show a little more likability and his relationship with his brother comes to the forefront, and while this still might not bring anything fresh to a kid's movie, it does make it slightly more wholesome than the first, and thus makes it a tad more respectable. I'm sure my scrutiny will fall limp on the ears of the target audience, though.

I think this was a little better in every category compared to the first. I like the brother bonding narrative, especially since I bet a lot of people could relate to that. It does seem to be a bit more clever in its writing in the first, you can also kinda tell that with a little more experience in roles, the child actors performed better. There is a lot of little things that can go unnoticed in this, those little things add up and I can say it's at least slightly above average.

I took my son to this- I laughed a bit and didn't feel like blowing my brains out part way through. (Let's remember 'Furry Vengenace'). Maybe I was in a good mood that day...

Not quite as charming as the first one, but it seems to capture a pre-teen/teenage brother relationship pretty well. Zahn and Harris are nice additions as the parents and get more action than in the first movie. This isn't a movie for everyone, but if you have a young son (4th or 5th grade) he could enjoy and probably relate to it.

Somehow, some way, this actually isn't a piece of crap. There's more to like about Rodrick Rules than the first Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. It's a little wittier, a little better on the acting front, and the gags and situational humor actually works. There's not nearly as much bodily function humor as you'd expect, which made this a decently pleasant surprise that isn't all that bad if there's nothing else on TV.

It now becomes apparent to me that this book series should've been adapted into a TV show and not a film franchise. This second entry in the series just doesn't feel big enough to justify a movie. I didn't think it was as good as the first one. Dealing with an older brother just isn't as interesting as acclimating to a new school and all its inner workings. It had a couple of amusing parts, but not as many as the first film. It was good that they had most of the cast back.

Main character no longer terrible person but lacks charisma, female lead should have had some character moments.

"A quickie sequel to a film released only last year, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules surprisingly improves on its predecessor."

This movie lacks the wit and charm of its predecessor while still following the same beats as before. The cast remains solid, but the laughs are lost. Since the story has been stretched so thin, so many of the scenes play out much longer than they need to. Fans of the series may lap this up, but there is little to fully enjoy this time around.

The second movie is actually pretty interesting. Nice relationship bonds, kind of funny. Who saw that coming?

Not quite as good as the first one, but still charming by its own right.
