Worth seeing for the visual style alone. Whatever other flaws the movie has - and there are several - it never fails to give us fascinating stuff to look at (the makeup, the sets, the colors). Pacino is hysterical as the villain.

forget plot, forget acting, forget depth, just eyefuck me with brazen technicolor artifice and vintage compositions, give me action montages set to sondheim numbers sang by madonna, drop me a grotesque, unhinged, self-loathing villain scurrying around rambling about plato and nietzsche, show me beatty escaping a room by putting together a makeshift see-saw and having his coworker jump onto one end. piss on the rules of Good Cinema and give me a genuine, goddamned shameless comic book movie.

When it's more fun to spot the actors than it is to watch the movie you know you've got issues. This movie wasn't bad per se, but Beatty was unconvincing and the whole thing felt like a vanity project despite how accurate it may have been. Waste of time.

The design of this is so interesting I didn't even notice Madonna is basically naked in a scene in this PG wonderland. Amazing cast, Pacino devours. Well amazing save for Warren, he's too old! Should've got like Kurt Russel. Also Madonna says some wild you better eat this dripping peach line, a little joke for the kids.

They really went all out imitating the style of the comic; it's almost like a proto-Sin City. Heavy makeup, facial prosthetics, and lots of brightly colored costumes and sets. For most people this will wear thin sooner more than later, but if you're in the mood for a movie with an interesting visual gimmick, you could do a lot worse.

I don't care what you say, in my mind, Dick Tracy is a perfect movie. The talent that was brought in for this movie goes above and beyond. Each actor was given an over-the-top character to portray and they were all admirable in their individual roles. The backgrounds and scenery were perfect as well. Whenever the camera shows the neighborhood and streets of the city they look like they should. This movie is a newspaper comic strip brought to life and it looks exactly how it should.

(Viewed in 2013): Dick Tracy is style over substance, but what style! Its use of primary colours is striking and bold, faithfully recreating its source material in a live action environment with a twist of pop art and German expressionism. The screenplay isn't as well developed as its visual design, Madonna looks right but can't act, and Elfman's score is too close to Batman, yet the rogues gallery of villains impresses, showcasing Pacino at his scene chewing best as Big Boy Caprice.

A workaholic has trouble committing to a conventional girl and is tempted by a sluttish one. A vast array of talent from Sondheim down comes together to try and put together a different kind of blockbuster and mostly succeeds, with lots of pleasure to be had in a whole variety of dimensions. Madonna was fine in her role, which in truth was a more appealing character than her rival: watch in high definition so you can enjoy the lingering string of saliva she shares after a kiss with Beatty.

It's a comic book plastered onto the big screen, and probably served as a fair template for films like Sin City. The art direction is the true hero in this movie, followed by a star-studded cast that are only in this for Beatty and to have some fun with overexaggerated characters. The only problem you might have with this is staying interested.

I have no personal memories of the TRUMAN ADMINISTRATION so I don’t know what the fuck a Dick Tracy comic strip is, but despite a wafer thin cops and mobsters shooting tommy guns at each other plot the visuals kept me interested here. The colors, sets, costumes, matte paintings, all very vivid and nostalgic. Al Pacino hamming it up having a grand old time. Madonna’s excessive makeup and lipstick makes her look like a clown. Elfman’s score all sounds like unused Batman 1989 cues.

It's a miracle I hadn't seen this yet. A pulpy old-school detective story with outrageous production design and cinematography (by Vittorio Storaro, my favorite), with a killer cast and lots of snappy dialogue? So far up my alley it's absurd. It's such an overblown movie I can understand the distaste others have for it, and it's admittedly flawed (especially the ridiculous twist ending), but the good far outweighs the bad for me. Especially Madonna's vamping - she was born for this role.

Warren Beatty's offbeat adaptation of Chester Gould's comic strip has a lot of things going for it: colorful, Oscar-winning sets and makeup (using the color scheme of the original strip), a sincere embrace of the material's tone and admiration of law enforcement, and a general sense of fun, especially when Al Pacino as mob boss Big Boy Caprice is onscreen. But the disjointed narrative (with obvious signs of recutting) and occasionally inscrutable moments keep it from achieving greatness.

Terrifically enjoyable cops 'n' robbers movie, more parody than thriller. Pacino steals the movie as the chief villain, but vampy Madonna and lovely Headly are almost as good. Terrific makeup (try to spot the many guest stars in cameos), production design, makeup -- a paper thin script, but you can't have everything.

Dick Tracy is almost completely devoid of context, rushing from plot point to plot point in a somewhat forced manner. Outside of some broad almost melodramatic pleas to the audience's emotions, it fails to give a reason to care about the plot or its characters. But I must admit the cast is very likable, knowingly hamming it up and mugging for the camera, because at its core Dick Tracy is just a goofy comic book movie. The main draw being its lush colorful visuals and grand theatrical set pieces.

a fun, if dated, comic book movie and a bright and well made film which was able to take a comic book character(Dick Tracy) primarily from the 1930's/1940's and make them relevant again , at least for a little while. A childhood favorite of mine and is still fun to watch now.

At the end of the day I guess this is exactly what I expected, a strange and captivating mess. It goes so full out with its style from the sets and colours right down to the makeup and even into the script that it's hard not to appreciate the effort, and that makes it enjoyable no matter how silly and nonsensical it gets. Which is good, because it gets silly and nonsensical a lot. The performances are a big part of what makes it all work, striking just the right tone and playing off each other.

This is honestly one of my favorite movies ever. Visually, nothing will ever top this in terms of pure eye-popping color and astounding sets that feel simultaneously real and like you've stepped into a comic panel. It's also the cast that makes this one great. Dustin Hoffman's hilarious and Pacino is a showstealer (what I love is that every Pacino impression is basically this performance). Even Madonna isn't as bad as they say. Overall, an absolutely phenomenal movie. (two times)

The production design, costumes, prosthetics and in general the visuals of "Dick Tracy" are magnificent. Warren Beatty is very good, and the cast they've put together is impressive although some of them are barely recognizable under their makeup and perhaps a little underwhelming - I mean, getting Dustin Hoffman to do whatever the fuck he was doing ad infinitum isn't exactly the most brilliant casting choice. On the whole, it's a fairly interesting film even if the storyline is all too familiar.

How can something so colorful and cartoony feel so grimy and unpleasant? The criminals are coded as evil by making them disfigured (awful even by the standards of the time), but Tracy comes off as worse than any, torturing suspects, chasing a child in front of a train over petty theft, and going easy on hot criminals over ugly ones. There are a *lot* of other problems - editing, pacing, plot coherence among others - but the way it draws on the ugly morality of '30s media just feels *bad*.

Beatty had long contemplated playing the comic-strip cop (under assorted directors), but only after a screen version of Batman had pulled in a zillion dollars, give or take, did he at last discover the wisdom, the ingenuity, the genius, the vision, to go ahead on the project, and with himself as the director as well as the star. That said, there is nevertheless some fun to be had in various design elements of the production, even if you must fight through a glaze of satiation to get at it.

Astonishing visual style in search of a watchable film. Beatty is woefully miscast in his own film. Dick Tracy is a very straightforward character living in a 1930's comic strip world. Beatty doesn't change the world, or really the character, but he plays him with his characteristic vague uncertainty. In the majority of his scenes, Beatty looks confused. (Always the vain man, Beatty exempts himself from having to wear makeup that makes him look like his comic strip character.)
