Seigfried has fabulous effects and imagery, and it's, in a way, commendable that Lang was so comprehensive in his telling of this tale, but motivations are hazy and pacing stops and starts making this a long, long 2.5 hours.

Entertaining medieval tale. A nice mix of adventure and intrigue with wonderful production design and effects. Breaking it up into small acts really helps keep the pacing brisk and the viewer focused.

Slow to start, reluctant to finally end, but everything between is pretty damn good. Some masterful mattes make for spectacular establishing shots. Recommended.

This was an impressive, highly entertaining piece of pure cinema. The sheer scope was epic and even the comical (by today's standards) dragon was well done and met a surprisingly gory end. I knew this was amazing when after 2.5 hours I was upset that it was over already. Great stuff, will be watching part 2 soon.

Astonishingly tedious and silly for a movie hailed as such a masterpiece. That dragon at the beginning looks like Droopy Dog. I felt sorry for it as Siegfried killed it

Although over 2 1/2 hrs. long this silent adaptation of the German poem certainly leaves you astonished when it comes to set design, story telling and (to some degree) acting. One can surely see that 'Metropolis' didn't come from nowhere...

(Rating and review apply to both parts.) Though true to the epic in its long-windedness, this is masterfully executed for its era. Yes, performances are exaggerated and some effects are primitive (if not laughable) by today's standards, but Lang honored a timeless tale, adorning it with all the medium had to offer and realizing a dream-like world just beyond the threshold of our own.

While the fantasy plot is shallow, simple, and honestly quite stupid, the set design, cinematography, and editing tricks are stunning, especially for a film of its time. It also brings out some sort of childlike glee in me to watch this sort of dumb swords-and-sandals type of epic, no matter how stupid.

It's so hard to imagine how in the world Fritz Lang could effectively create these sets, special effects, and high-end production values this early in film's history. His films are literally decades ahead of the competition. Siegfried is excellent adventure fare with a great story and arresting visuals. Truly a masterpiece, to say the least.

Excellent atmosphere and special effects (for the period) in this archetypal mythological tale.

Pitched somewhere between high art and low kitsch, Lang's retelling of the Siegfried and Gudrun myths is visually incredible throughout, and the effort made to give audiences something worth looking at at all times is astounding. Lang said that Siegfried's trickery may be forgivable but his giving away a secret to his wife was not, but there seems to be no thought that Kriemhild bore a lot of responsibility for her own blabbing, which is a bit odd, given how single-mindedly vengeful she becomes.

What really makes this worthwhile is the great art direction: sets, costumes, mattes, etc. all very carefully brought together to create a highly original and effective style. (This was, after all, made by the same people as Metropolis.) There's even a nice animation sequence and some remarkable puppetry. For better or worse, the plot is very faithful to the Niebelungenlied; it's also rather slow to proceed and sparing in characterization for something of this length, though.

People wear helmets with two foot wide wings bolted to either side and everyone just goes about their business as if this is normal behavior.

Epic in the every way. Massive sets, great cinematography and a heroic tale of betrayal. The great hero Siegfried has big hair and a big heart but falls victim to the schemes of Brunhilde, Hagen Tronje and his beard. Meanwhile King Gunther is a lettuce of a person. Tragedy follows!

Almost as beautiful and entrancing as Metropolis. The plot is standard folklore-type stuff, but it's told so well that one doesn't mind the lack of originality.

i have a strong distaste for historical fantasy epics, and because of that this certainly isn't up there with lang's best german films, but this manages to be an exception to the rule, because i can't help being captivated by his always fantastic visuals and strong narrative clarity. thankfully it isn't as convoluted as some of these things can be, though it's still obviously a rather silly story. but a pretty good silent.

Some of this is so cool. The dragon obviously looks dated but is delightful. I wonder how they did it. The dream sequence is interesting. It's just very strong storytelling.

The character Siegfried has to be the dopiest great hero of all time. He plays like a stereotype of what everyone hates about Germans; I can easily imagine him getting up at 5 am to line up for bread rolls AND ENJOYING IT.
